You can tell them that a well-regulated mechanical watch like a Rolex isn't a lot less accurate than a run-of-the-mill quartz. Plus or minus ten to thirty seconds a month is about what you'd expect from an ordinary quartz watch. At 10 seconds, the difference is meaningful, but at 30, the difference is what, a couple of minutes?

Now, a high accuracy quartz, at 5 to 10 seconds a year, is a horse of another color. I am fascinated by them.

And comparing quartz to an ordinary mechanical watch is different.

Seriously, the degree of inaccuracy for a mechanical watch is insignificant for any rational user. So what, I was three minutes early.

And all the other factors - interest, beauty, being precise little machines - are the more important things anyway.

This is especially true if you own a whole bunch of watches as I do. I'm amazed when I pick out a quartz watch that I have not looked at in months and it's within seconds of the correct time.

I'm a little irritated when I pick up one that has a dead battery.

Even my cheapest mechanicals can be up and running with the correct time in a couple of minutes.

I say, a watch isn't about telling the time; it's about your personal relationship with time. That normally makes them go away.

A 69 beetle (actually own a 70 beetle convertible) is probably closer to my Rolex than a brand new BMW ( which I also own ).

I have a menu of responses to the typical fatuous Rolex questions---why a watch that is inaccurate? My Timex keeps better time and only cost $30. How can you justify that much $$$ for a watch? etc., ad nauseam, ad infinitum, ad absurdum...

I reply according to the intelligence level of the inquisitor.

1) My Rolex is a plane ticket and bail anywhere in the world

2) I might quote Keats, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." And compare my Rolex to great a work of art.

3) I may paraphrase a line from the Rocky Horror Picture Show---"I didn't buy it for you!"

4) I may launch into an explanation of General Relativity, specifically, its sine qua non---gravity. Then explain the physics of a mechanical watch and the effects of gravity on the movement and how engineers mitigate gravity through innovation. I'll talk about the equivalence principle and describe how objects under the same gravitational influence accelerate equally despite having different masses and compositions, and allow that according to relativity, my Rolex will always tell me the time according to my frame of reference regardless of where I am in the universe. Furthermore, how could I pollute the elegance of Einstein's Theory of Relativity by contemplating the effects of time dilation on anything other than a Rolex?

Most people think all watches have a battery.
I don't mention accuracy as they wouldn't get it, and I couldn't be bothered to explain.
Most people are only interested in the price as even idiots understand $$$.
