My first "comment"

I am a new Rolex owner and wear my Sub-C daily. I wear it with a "Bond" NATO strap.
Anyway, I am an Engineer, and work in Healthcare. Today I was on an Elevator, a physician got on, and I see him staring at my wrist, looking at my security badge then back at my wrist.
I look at him, he finally looks at me and smugly comments "You can afford that? it can't be real!"
I suppress my smart a.. comeback, look at him and replied, "I can, and it is!"
Apparently, in his world Only physicians can wear Rolex.

I had to stay civil since we both work here, well, technically he is a contract employee... But little to no difference.

Hard to believe that story my friend, that is an unusual level of rudeness coming from a physician to someone wearing a sub on a NATO?

but there are A holes everywhere so....

I would have complimented your good taste

Sad story, but true. Most of the docs are great, a few are butt-heads, same as every other walk of life. I was mostly taken aback.

I'm not sure I would have been as restrained as you. Not that I would have called him a jackass, but I probably would have asked him why he thought it was the right thing to do to comment about someone's ability to afford anything and challenged him about his underlying assumptions. As I get older, I have less patience for foolishness.

Aholes like that think you are inferior to them. So I would love to make them feel even more inferior / stupid / intimidated.

Couple of quick ones I can think of :

- I can afford it cos I rob people like you at night
- What the F are you talking about ? This is cheap, only a few thousand dollars. Don't you have one ?
- What are you wearing ? Let's see what you got ?
- Obviously you haven't seen my Porsche outside yet
- I know, my salary can only afford me Rolexes, someday I will be able to afford a Patek Phillipe.

-You're right I can't afford it, took it off your nightstand last night after plowing your misses xD
sure way to get him to throw the first punch

My bosses boss called my Rolex a fake one day after I was complimenting her Ivory and Jade bracelets that were probably 100+ years old. She looked at my watch, asked what kind it was, I said Rolex, and we got talking about jewelry, she asked how much it was and said there's no way it was real for that price. I didn't know what to say, so I just said I know it's real I got it authenticated before I bought it; and walked away. Sure I could've argued with her, but it wasn't worth my time. And my boss knew it was real, as he had one as well and we always got a chuckle out of the story afterward. he was actually pissed when it happened though, but I didn't want to get fired so I told him not to bring it up, and it wasn't a big deal.

well then I apologize on behalf of our profession, who should know better

we are all humans and treat each other with respect and dignity

that is a shockingly rude comment to make to a total stranger!

My fiancée works in health care as a lab tech/scientist and she has gotten comments about her engagement ring -- "that's too big to be real."

I have noticed doctors look at my watches more than most people.

I'm always so surprised by this kind of thing. While Rolex watches seem pricey to those used to wearing a Casio watch, lots of people out there own "unnecessary" and fun things, like motorcycles, boats, engagement rings, wave runners, expensive pickup trucks, etc., that cost more than a steel Submariner. I'd never question a middle class guy who just bought a $9K motorcycle for fun. Rolex certainly seems to bring out opinions in people.

From my experience at some point people comment on boats usually around 60'.

I've never understood this monetary response to an SS Rolex, these cost less than half of the average car, hardly a major issue for anyone with reasonable means and a lot of determination, and such condescension is a sign of a bad upbringing, a fact I would have brought very fiercely to his attention.
