This.

I have had one friend ask and I told him what msrp was. He has 4 kids and a very non understanding wife. Baume and Mercier is about as high up the watch scale as he goes, just loves watches.

"The Bentley dealer included it with the purchase of my Mulsanne." Have never been ask in over 30 years. If asked I'd tell the truth, "My dad bought it for a few hundred dollars." Enjoy your new Rolex!

I just say, "I traded for it", no need to know the trade was $ for watch. A pal would say, "Why you need to know, do I owe you money!"

If the person is a close friend I might say "...it retails for (whatever the retail is) but I didn't pay close to that" (which is true).

If the person is not close I would probably say something that politely lets them know they've crossed the line of common courtesy...

I'll try to remember this - I always get asked and almost always feel uncomfortable revealing that I paid approx a third of my annual income for it. I then feel I have to justify my purchase.

My watch costs double what my car cost. Well, used to. I used to drive a POS Civic but have since upgraded.

I disagree. $10k for a stainless steel watch (as mine is) is extraordinarily expensive. To most people, spending $1-2K for a watch is a lot. Most think a TAG is expensive, never mind a Cartier.

I agree with you, but I think some folks think they are much more than $8k to $10k.

I think it's weird when people ask how much stuff is (other than my wife). I usually just smile.

But, yes, many think (any) Rolex costs an exorbitant amount.

If it's a good friend I tell them. Most anyone else, like a stranger, I'll just make light of it and say something like "I'd rather not say, it only depresses me."

To someone I figure will be critical I just say, "It was free. I found it washed up on the beach."

Australians are pretty much up front and I have never been asked, even by friends.
They can find out if they want to and I will tell them if they ask.
If they were rude they would wish they had not opened their mouths as I have no patience with rude people.

More than happy to tell anyone who asks, I quite like showing off that my salary is high enough to warrant such purchases. I've earnt it.

They're not cheap but I love watches. I've never had anyone ask outside a close friend in private. I told him of course. He aims to get a breitling some day.

Most conversations in my life are about buying and selling stuff, my family knows what I paid, as well as my close friends. I've had a few people ask me to try it on.

In my experience if people are asking they probably already have a good idea

Only my brother and son have asked me. I told them the actual cost as they like similar high quality things are are familiar the the brand. Outside of that, I have simply told people:

"it was a gift so I have no idea"

For some reason, I tend to tell only my (younger) brother the true cost of things.

Think it may be an older/est brother thing. Knowing he'll be impressed (?) and push himself harder.

+1. And IMHO the real problem would be telling without being asked.

I find that too. I find that some people think Rolex is the world's most expensive watch brand in the world... lool

Expensive? Rolex is just the starting price tag

Yes. Many folks are genuinely unfamiliar with the price and their imaginations run a bit wild. There are people I know who would think my Explorer II could cost anything from $2,000 to over $20,000, for example.

They just don't know and their perception is warped a bit by pop culture. Their guess is often skewed upwards. They just have no meaningful frame of reference.

No doubt if I told them the truth, they would still think it's a lot but not nearly as much as they might have imagined.
