Worth the money? (Large pic)
This is a new chronograph by Dunhill. Turning the bezel retracts the buttons. At 3,250 Pound UK I find the price a bit steep. And I think it's fugly

Thats one ugly watch but will sell because of the Dunhill name. And like this new Hamilton to be unveiled at Basil 2006 bloody awful IMO.And not even original : the Graham swordfish descended that particular road, but more symmetrical.

Well, you can begin to understand it when you see the team that designed that watch!
Hope that's not a Rolex on Frack's wrist!

This one looks pretty similar to that Hamilton. Wonder who designed it?

I agree,, it's pretty fugly. It's got potential, but a long way to go between potential and good execution.

Are any of these really worth the money? My gut would say probably not, but I still love 'em.
But I would not pay what they are asking for that watch, it is all about whatever floats your boat though.

Like the idea of retracting buttons, but could be just another thing to break or go wrong.
I don't like the looks of it, but always appreciate a watch manufactuer that tries something new. I will give them credit there. |

I saw that same article in a magazine, and was bowled over by its ugliness - but nothing could prepare me for the shock I had when I saw it in the flesh! - Selfridges has a Dunhill concession, and when I was browsing I came across it in a case - and it is truly horrible! - why would someone spend any cash on it? - oh, and it looked very 'cheap' in terms of finish etc - ugh!

The only watches truly worth their price are 'froogs' to coin a term from another place. i.e. frugal automatics that are priced up to $500. Beyond that, you're overpaying for a luxury time piece/exotic metals, etc.
Consider markup from the manufacturer is more than 50% by the time you fork over your hard earned money. Consider to, a Seiko Monster costs about $150 give or take so it would cost Seiko less than $75 to manufacture, advertise, distribute, etc. BTW, that Graham is pretty fugly, but I guess someone with serious dexterity problems would find it 'handy'? |

Frans, interesting you ask that. I posted a pic of a Grand Seiko that was basically an hommage to the Rolex Explorer II. It is a beautiful watch and Grand Seikos are held to specs far more rigorous than COSC, so in theory it should be more accurate than the Rolex. Since I have an ExpII, I wouldn't want that Seiko now. But if I was looking for a dual timezone watch, it would come down to price for me. If the Seiko was less $$, I'd absolutely buy the Grand Seiko, particularly because they aren't available in North America and it's the ultimate WIS stealth watch. Only a true WIS would appreciate a Grand Seiko. Seiko is also a fully in-house manufacturer and I would also guess because they're more 'rare' a GS would hold it's value better than a Rolex. |

I did say I'd take the Seiko if it was less money. For same or more, I'd take the Rolex. Lots of people say lots of things about Rolex and the people who wear them, but truth be told, if I ever needed quick cash, a Rolex will sell faster than a WIS-specific watch. But if talking long term value when you have the time to find the right buyer, i still stay a GS would retain it's value better. Of course, potential buyers would mostly be in Japan too, where GSs are likely as plentiful as Rolex are in North America. Tough call, really. |

Well, it's a non-issue for me cuz I have no access to GS's and I'm not paying the insane import duties to customs to get one via the net.

Since I have one, and I quite like it, in a way yes. But beyond the one Rolex I have, the only other one I'd ever realistically want is a rolesium YM. Otherwise, I have no desire to acquire another Rolex. Too many other interesting brands to discover and enjoy. Rolex is great for what it is, but it ain't the be-all and end-all in my books. And amazingly, this forum stands out as a shining example to all Rolex forums to be more 'panerai-like' in brotherhood and disposition. |
