My response to stupid questions is "a gentleman never asks, and a lady never tells"

And being a guy, usually diffuses the situation.

Don't worry about sounding like a douche, the person asking the question beat you to it.

My answer is :

'What do you think . . . ?' and I leave it at that - they'll think what they want anyway and I KNOW the answer so nothing else matters.

To me it's kinda an odd question to a complete stranger--very random like: are you adopted, is that a toupee, or what country are you from (despite speaking the national language perfectly). All in all, depending on the setting, always good to exercise caution when asked such a question from a complete stranger...

Never been asked about my Rolex watches, but strange enough after "nice Harley" - "what did it cost ?".

Always say no unless you want trouble. The person asking is, by definition, an idiot.

If someone asked I would say that the watch is real. I cannot remember when someone would have last asked. Rather many of people I know well are aware of my watch interest.

I feel like asking if a watch is real or fake is an odd question. I personally would say fake if the first question asked was about authenticity from someone who I do not know... Any time I've approached someone about their watch, I make sure I know what their wearing in order to start a convo. I never just ask about authenticity. If they offer it then that's fine, I more want to see what kind of watch person they are.

Oh, and to answer the question, it depends on who's asking. My sister asked and I looked her with incredulity - she wouldn't appreciate knowing the truth, given her financial circumstances. In fact, I can't think of many people that it would do me a favour to confess to that I'd spent so much money on watches. They'd all think I was totally insane... And likely unconscious jealousies would arise, so it's info best kept quiet. I'm happy knowing and that's all that matters.

No one ever asked me but my buddy has got a great response on a fake. He has numerous high end watches but he has a fake day date and he does yard work with it on. His neighbor asked him about the watch as the fake gold with shining. My buddies response was got to wear it. Well then he pulls out the trimmer goes back to work and slams his wrist against the fence. He goes off like he damaged his watch. The neighbor cannot believe what just happened. My buddy just smiles and says it's a fake.

I would answer: "I hope so as I bought it from an official Rolex dealer."

I don't know to whom this quote is attributed, but I've always liked it.
"Never complain, never explain".
It's funny how some people expect an answer from another person regardless of the question they pose. It's like they insert their little quarter, and expect an answer to pop out. And many times we oblige them.
To questions I don't like, or slightly disrespectful comments, from strangers, I'll say "Do I know you?". Question back. They stumble for an answer. And if it's no, I say "I didn't think so."
The very few times I've used it, it works.

Hahaha! I've thought about doing the same. Luckily mine are all divers and 'they all look the same' according to her. So half dozen watches becomes 1 :-)

I've gotten some compliments but never been questioned on authenticity. People do stare sometimes though. I bet the question crosses their mind.

Haven't been asked per se, but someone asked to see my gold Yachty before asking "How much are they???" I told him a rough retail price to which he replied "So it's fake." My answer was "I hope not."
