Adam,
Sorry for confusing you. I was thinking of the usual servicing or maintenance done once every 5~7 years as per suggested by Rolex.

Full service is still pretty cheap in HK compared to most countries. You can get a Sub or other no-date models serviced here for about HK$2,200 which is about US$285. In the US, and most other countries, that will cost you around US$600.

RSC quoted me HK$3,800 simply for servicing my 70s 1601. I thought it was pretty steep.

I believe that the servicing cost in RSC HK for modern pieces is approximately 1/20 of the retail price. Pretty interesting in how they set the price for regular servicing.

Oh yeah, they charge steep prices for vintage. They wanted about three times more to service my 1964 Air King than they charged to service my 2006 Air King. I said no thanks. I think they outsource the vintage work, hence the higher prices. I've had about ten pieces serviced by them and have been really happy with their work overall. Just a couple of minor issues that were later resolved.

I assume that you always decline RSC to include polishing when you did send it for servicing? I am thinking of sending in my 2002 GMT Master II (16710). Should I ask them not to polish my case? A few hairline scratches and a light ding.....just struggling to see if I should leave the "scars".

I usually ask for a light polish. They do that very well, no overpolishing.

Well, I got it back yesterday and now that its fitted the new acrylic service crystal, which they originally told me was going to be flat, looks exactly the same as the domed one that it replaced. It needed replacing, but if they'd told me clearly what it was going to be like when I had the watch serviced in 2013, I could have had it installed back then free of charge. Unusually poor communication from them. It's not even worth taking a photo. Just see post #5, it's the same crystal.

Oh dear. So the replaced crystal is exactly the same lookalike serviced-T19?

Yep. Oh well, can't complain. I've got a like-new 5513 now that's good for daily wear and diving. I'd rather have that than a new SubC.

It looks great Adam, you're right about the dome. It still looks vintage. Enjoy wearing it.

Adam,

Although this is a service dome, isn't this the right dome shape? Don't you prefer this as opposed to a flat crystal? Personally, I like it :)

Yes, I prefer this to a flat crystal. That's why I didn't get it changed at service, when they told me (more than once) that the replacement would be flat. Older domes were rounder and higher than this service dome, though. It's hard to find genuine ones these days.

Looks great, Adam. Got to be happy with that result.

At least they didn't arse it up like they initially did with your OQ date disc.

Just curious, how long ago did you have the service that it now failed the pressure test?

2013.... But it failed because I kept the original very old crystal, which is why I just got it replaced recently.

why would it fail the pressure test? didn't you just have a complete overhaul in the past few years?
