Amazing sound from inside my Rolex

I've always had good hearing. Sometimes I hear things at the same time or before dogs do, and we all know how well they hear.

Anyway, when I let people listen to my Rolex, they either can't hear anything, or just hear ticking. However, when I listen, it sounds like there's a symphony in there. In order to prove to people that I'm not crazy and hearing things, I used the studio where I work to record what I can hear.

Maybe we should take the whole "watch sings to you" thing more literally.

Why does the sound change? Because the second hand is moving towards/away from the microphone?

It changes the same way if I just hold it up to my ear and listen to the whole thing at once.

yup. heard that before too!

any chance you could SLOW the sound down since you have the tools and stuff.. you know like how high-speed cameras gives us a slow-motion picture.. would be interesting to hear it slow...

thanks for sharing anyways!

I have heard and enjoyed this sound on several watches over the years, the first being my first ever watch (Timex 'Calendar Sprite'), which I've had since my 7th birthday. I could even hear it through a pillow! I always just assumed it was the vibration of the second-hand resonating which I could hear.

Any watch any brand or price if its beating at 28800BPH will all sound the roughly the same. But the persons hearing the space taken up by the movement thickness of case etc will all play there part in the sound resonance of the movement.

It's the pallet fork hitting the two barriers on the mainplate what makes this sound. Very cool!

Thanks for posting. I hear the same thing on both my Rolexes, but can't seem to hear anything but ticking on my other watches.

I was wondering the same. It seems to change around 25 and 55. I wonder whether this is the same for any watch with the same movement, etc. etc.

Does it have to do anything with accuracy? I mean, can the sound be used to understand the efficiency of the escapement or something along these lines? (well I know sound is somewhat used in a timegrapher, but I mean use it not to check global accuracy but to verify whether there are losses in efficiency due to resonances etc etc).

All this being said it would be nice to have a sound library of different watches. Do you have any friend with an El Primero, or a Nautilus etc etc???

Beautiful!

I listen to my DJII too, enjoying how the "heart" of the watch is beating, but only to realise that i have wasted so much time doing that. :P

I completely understand. Every so often I put mine near my ear when it's real quiet and listen to it...

Thanks for sharing! That's just too cool!

That is TOTALLY cool! I now can hear that in my own watch although not as distinctly of course.
Thanks so much for doing this and sharing it with us! Absolutely amazing!

I've had my Rolex for about 4 days now. Last night was the first really quiet time I had and I wanted to see if I could hear ticking or...anything really. I thought I was crazy, but I heard the exact sounds from your video. I guess I have super hearing, just don't tell my wife, lol.
