Horrifying experience!

Just had a hair-raising experience- the kind that I had always dreaded.

During a routine inspection of a out-lying construction site, I was talking to the Project Head in his well-laid out office when I accidentally bumped my watch into the frame of the metal door to his cabin.
I didn't notice this minor bump at the time but later, when I was talking to the site team, I glanced at my watch (green sub, bought around 3 months ago from my AD) and was horrified to notice that the glass seemed to be chipped at the 10 o'clock position.
I checked the ceramic bezel, seemed to be fine but that glass.....!!

Passed the rest of the day in a haze- I just didn't even want to look at the watch. Fortunately, I was able to keep busy- so many things happen on construction sites and that was a real blessing.

On the flight back home, I checked out the watch- there appeared to be a lot of glass debris piled up around the 10 o'clock mark. I was able to push some away with my fingernail but resisted using more force as I was worried I might end up pushing glass slivers onto the dial and perhaps into the watch innards. I even tried wiping the watch face with a wet tissue; could feel the bump and thought I could even discern the crack along the edge.
I did wonder how the sapphire glass chipped so easily but possibly this was just my bad luck- hit the glass at just the right angle and boom!!

Passed the flight in a cloud of gloom- was remembering the cost of replacing the sapphire glass. As the watch is new, regular service wouldn't be due for years. So either I bite the bullet and move around with a cracked watch face- and risk it collapsing completely at some point in time.
Or bite another bullet- and change the glass. And pay a bomb

Since I had been touching the watch face almost continuously for the past few hours, it was covered in finger grease. When I reached home, I used a little Veraet and gently scrubbed along the bezel edge with a watch brush and lo and behold, the crack just vanished!!

What I had thought was glass debris piling up was paint that had been pushed out from the door frame I'd bumped into- I have never been so relieved!
Just thought I'd share- in case someone has the same experience

Woo-hoo, whatta day!

Well first it was hardly a horrifying hair-raising experience its just a watch and yes sapphire is prone to chipping around the edges on most of the Rolex sports its because the crystal is above the bezel. But looks like you was lucky this time, its a good job you do not use your watch as a proper tool watch, then I would expect you to have a heart attack at the slightest bump. You should have seen one of my watches after 6 years of almost daily underwater work and use then perhaps you would of had hair-raising experience or even gone bald by just looking at it.

Glad the watch is OK, but what about the door frame??

If paint looks like glass then make appt. to see your eye doc.

Now as for the crystal, each service on my Daytonas means another crystal since they are always chipped around the edges after 5-10 yrs at the track. Just a cost of doing business. Adds about $200 to the bill.

Not a problem since that works out to less than a dime a day to go first class.

As Peter said - it is meant to be used and will acquire character from routine bumps and whacks against typical hazards.

You are entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine, and my opinion again it was hardly a Horrifying experience as in the OP header topic.

I'm sure it was a horrifying experience for the OP, but it wouldn't be for others. I've hit my Y-Series GMT-II on door frames many times without any damage at all to the watch. Can't always say the same for the door frame, though.

I don't always agree with Peter, but in this case I do. It's a tool watch. If you don't want to wear it and use it and abuse it then leave it in the safe.

Some of the best looking Subs are the ones that have been used for what they were designed and beat to hell:

Ok, why is no one asking how Veraet (a watch cleaning solution) can repair a crack? We need a picture of the damage to let you know if you have an issue or not. If you sapphire is really cracked (as opposed to chipped edge), you had better get is pressure tested. Many AD's do this for free or charge like $10. You were talking about concern of getting chips onto the dial, so this makes me think it isn't just a chip. Your Veraet may have just temporarily filled a crack to make it look ok, but you could have a structural issue.

Gotta agree with Pete, it's an easy fix. glad you didn't have to go through the trouble, but it's definitely not a watch-destroying accident.
