You need to be more specific. I don't think that anybody knows what you are referring to.

In the late 80's Rolex did designate many of their non-date watches with an "M" when they modified the 3000 movement to the 3130. The "M" simply designated those models as having the Modified movement installed. Air Kings, OP's, and Subs all came as an M until the next model change. The 14060M was the longest lasting of this variant.

The Datejust was a date model and did not get the "M" designation, so what M are you referring to ?

The Model number etched on the DJ is "1601 M" . From the serial on the opposite edge, it may have been produced in 1987. Not sure if that helps. Thanks

What you have is a FAKE DJ.

Model 1601 non-quickset with pie pan dial ends somewhere in 1975-1976.

The fact it's been serviced by a Rolex AD doesn't technically mean anything. I know of someone who had an AD claim his Rolex was fake, but when sent in to Rolex themselves. The big boys confirmed it was genuine.

thanks. i did read that story from one of the threads here. i was able to talk to the Rolex Service Center ( i mistakenly mentioned AD previously) where it was last serviced. Without confirming specifically, they did say that they would not service a non-genuine watch but would not go further unless the actual watch is sent in. it is just interesting that the M designation does not seem to appear much online although i've seen it in Japan and Europe sites.

It could be market specific. There are plenty of unknowns when it comes to Rolex.

What movement does it have. ??

yup it was re engraved alright... by the RSC when they serviced it.
they probably put the M marking after they did the overhaul/maintenance to indicate that they replaced some of the parts already... they probably wrote date of service on the inside of the case back as well.

Not keen on the engravings as model number is bigger than the odd shaped ORIG. ROLEX DESIGN. Dial would also be a service as T SWISS MADE T....

Under what circumstances does Rolex engrave an M during service?

Doh....Lol. No I didn't, I never look at the date, I just expect it to current - mind you what was a fact then, is a fact now, and poor old Tools has been patiently waiting for the movement info for 7 yrs ;-)

found this thread a few days ago and was surprised with the particular question regarding the "M" engraving.
this is actually the 2nd "M" case i've seen. the 1st was on an all steel DJ36. very similar to this case, the watch was previously serviced in the RSC more than a decade ago.
upon recent service outside of RSC, the watch restoration shop noticed an "M" engraving..
the running theory is, the RSC probably engraved the "M" after they fully serviced it more than 10 yrs ago.
i hope people can chime in on their theories as well.
