Backup stratgy with Mac/iphone/ipad

I'm making the switch away from Windows. I don't want to get into why, but rather how to set up my new mac network properly with minimal mistakes.

So, I will have a macbook pro, 2 iphones and an ipad.

I want to minimize putting the iphone/ipad backups on the macbook due to their large sizes (would take up most of the drive). I know I can make a symlink to an external drive, but I also want to backup the macbook as well. I also hear people having issues with multiple iphones backing up to same computer. I have had my issues with this on Windows. I somehow get my wife's apps on my phone and then have to delete them.

I also want to remain as wireless as possible.

So, I know I could get a time capsule for the macbook backups, but I was hoping for something more. Thinking airport extreme with a Western Digital "my book" or "my cloud" connected to the airport extreme. Could that be both my network storage extension for my iphone/ipad backups and my backup area for my macbook pro using time capsule? Thanks for any help/setup suggestions here. The genius didn't have much help to explain to me.

I moved about a year ago with more or less the same setup ,
for macbook i use a wd my book through usb ,making backups weekly not really worry about data loss since all my email a/c imap ,contacts/notes/diary synced in icloud ,important docs saved on the server too.
Mobile devices ,icloud offer 5gb for free not too much but enough for me for backups the trick is that every ios user has to have own icloud a/c then you get the 5gb for each a/c.i think you got wife s apps since you got family sharing you may want to switch off.

Hope it helps!

It'll take a while to backup your entire hard drive via wireless (ie. slow) so I'd recommend go through the USB route via Time Machine (built into the OS).

The rest (iPhone & iPad) you could just back up to iCloud like Bryan said.

Just today I bought a Seagate 2TB external drive for our MacBook Pro. I'm trusting the cloud with my iPad and iPhone stuff. We really don't have a lot on the Mac, 4-5k in pics and our music library. (We pay a little extra every month for some extra iCloud storage) I still keep stuff on the old thumb drives, Excel budget files and some pics, letters and the like. I back them up to a second thumb drive every month or so and keep them in two different locations.

I am surprised you are concerned with space on your Mac. As a Mac user since 1976 I have rarely had that problem. At the present time I have 2 iPhones, and 2 iPads backed up to my iMac . Both phones back up to iCloud also under separate accounts.

I could do the initial backup connected directly and then switch to incremental wireless.
