At that time (around Jan. 1971) in Vietnam the same watch was $180 through the Army exchange and was $255 MSRP in the U.S. I did get some good-natured harassment from a friend who bought a similar Seiko in Viet Nam at about the same time, and he was amused that my watch didn't have a quick-set date feature like his did.
That makes sense. That's funny about the quickset thing. I think it was Seikos that his buddies bought. He's been dead for almost 10 years, and sometimes it's hard to remember the exact details of some of his stories.

I've elevated my GMT to a privileged status and it is no longer a daily wearer like it was for decades. That's partly because of its great sentimental value and partly its ever-rising monetary value. I now have three Tudors that take turns bearing that guidon. Instead of burying the GMT in a safe-deposit box, why not wear it on special occasions and buy another watch to take up the daily-grinder chores? Or, maybe more than one.
I have a bunch of watches at this point, and I probably wear the GMT Master once a week or so. I'm just concerned about the place burning down or being burgled.

I would buy a small safe with a fire rating to put it in, one that can't be moved easily. Mine go in the safe without fail when not worn.

Thanks to those here that served their country. I think that gmt looks so nice and clean, I'd leave it as is. Love reading these stories, looking forward to more pics of the accessories that were included.

So, I bought a "new" bezel insert. I didn't want to spend a fortune, and I didn't want it to be too beat up. I was willing to go with less fade for fewer dings and lower price. I ended up spending 110 pounds of the one posted below. Should have it next week, and I'll post a pic of the watch with it installed. It's not quite the right period, but I think this will give the watch more of a vintage look. Given some of the bezel insert prices, I think I did okay.

It's really very close to my memory of how the watch looked when I was a child. I was really surprised by how deep the colors on the NIB insert are.

Pretty dark here in Cincinnati, so it's hard to get a good pic, but I got the faded insert today, and installed it. I think it looks pretty good!

Here is a better pic that is much closer to what it actually looks like. You can see how faded it is compared to the insert I was using.
