Seiko skx 007 vs. Rolex Submariner

As much as i love the submariner the skx is one hell of a piece...

I'll give you that. I have several and for $150 you can't go wrong.

They don't really compare if you take price out of the equation.

I have a similar seiko dive watch however it only made it roughly 6 years before it wouldn't keep any kind of time. Runs marginally fast sitting and hours fast while worn. Unfortunately I consider it a disposable watch. My sub... not so much.

Want something cheap that's your choice. Want something great go with the sub.

I love the Seiko SKX watches, I have two and they are excellent beaters.

The movements are easy to service and a lot of parts are available.

SKX divers are an amazing value, run like champs, and are a blast to mod to your imaginations content. Here are my current lineup of heavily personalized SKX divers.
Comparing brands would equate to VW vs Porsche.

I have small wrists and enjoy my Tudor Submariner 75090 (mid-size). Been thinking about getting a mid-size Seiko Diver as a beater.

Any thoughts out there as I piggy-back off the OP's post?

Skx

If you have small wrists you may want to try the SKX013 which is the smaller version of the SKX007. It is as tough and reliable at the full size.

The modified versions are fantastic, love them. My son has pinched my 009 for traveling. Good watch cred for $200!

You gys probably already know this but these come in two grades if you will, although the jury is out if it matters at all...

But the SKX007J is the Japanese version- all made in Japan.

The SKX007K is the Korean version (and often around $130-$150)

Japanese version are closer to double the cost of the Korean versions.

As far as I can tell there is no advantage either way; however if I buy a Swiss watch I expect it to be made in Switzerland. Same with a Japanese watch as far as I'm concerned too.

The vintage ones are rather interesting as well- totally bling-free as they were busy being tool watches long after Rolex decided to make their dive watch out of solid gold (which I still don't understand but whatever!)

You don't have to like Seiko, but you do need to respect them.

Yup, I own both and actually prefer the 013 because of the size. Both are excellent of course.

I owned a fair amount of SKX Seiko diver before. Love them, my only complain is for the 7S movement, you can't hand wind them. Sometimes they would stop on me shorting after I set them because I didn't "wind" them enough.

There's absolutely no difference between the J vs K. Both are made in Malaysia, uses made in China. The J's were made for sale in Japan.

Really? I thought when it said "made in Japan" across the bottom of the dial it had to be Japanese made...

The "K" version does not have this on the otherwise identical dial...

Same with mine and when I got it the "J" was important for me. I had to spend more to have "made in Japan" on the dial.

Dan's mods are phenomenal.
I have SKX007/009/031 but my favorite is the 031 (discontinued). Crown at 3, 40mm and thinner than the 007, close to the Oyster case.

It's not an SKX, it's a Seiko 5 with no screw down crown.

Really? That's obvious. I was talking about the 'J' on serial number and 'made in japan' on the dial. just that.

I bought an 007 & didn't really bond with it. I understand it's got great specs for diving but to me it felt like a $100 watch & got returned immediately.

I prefer Quartz when I go for a cheapie, whenever I get the watch buying bug and I pick up a good quality cheapie, like a Seiko, Vostok, or Swatch I usually end up never wearing it, and just give it away to one of my nephews. Just no reason not to wear my Rolex.

to those that say you can't compare Seiko to a rolex... I honestly beg to differ.

Got married 8 weeks ago - I wore my MM300 that I Got for the wedding... gave the guys 007's & a Tux for being in the wedding party.

The 007's photograph fantastic I wish I wasn't at work or i'd post something - Do they compare to a Rolex? Ok, no, but they're honestly very nice. but the MM300?

Well - I got rid of my SD4k. There was no point of having both. I'm going to write up a comparison with some pictures I took before the sale, but Honestly... The added size adds to the jeans and t-shirt look, and an SD4K is no replacement for a Sub when you're talking about fit or slipping under a sleeve.

Now will the mm300 stick around forever? who knows. Probably at some point i'll sell it to go toward a JLC grande calendar or a DJ for the wife as it doesn't get a lot of wear, but it's a great travel watch, a great watch in general, and if I had 6k, I don't know if i'd necessarily shell out for a used SD, when I could get a New MM300, get my name on the papers, and pocket 4k toward my next purchase.

If you're into stealth watches, its a great buy. (You'll get a TON of comments, but no one will realize the value)

Got some bad news. Once you experience the value and performance you're gonna want more, many more.
