You win the Powerball. What're the first 5 things you buy?

Excluding any debts (student loans, mortgage, etc.).

In this order:

1. Saks/Neiman for a brand new wardrobe for the wife and I
2. The Rolex Store to pick up a Day-date, Sky Dweller, Platona and WG GMT for myself, and whatever the wife wants
3. Two first class plane tickets to Italy to travel and stay at the finest hotels
4. Upon my return, I'd buy a new vehicle (likely a Merc G Wagon) for myself
5. A new house (likely in Chicago or LA/San Diego)

You?

I know this isn't fun, but here's my list of what I'd do
1. Hire 2-3 tax attorneys and figure out a plan to set up immediate family and friends.
2. Donate large chunks to our favorite 5-10 charities
3. Then scale back at work (if still able to work. May become too much of a malpractice target because of new very deep pockets).
4. Patek 5990 and/or 5980
5. Travel extensively (Europe, Australia, New Zealand).

A lawyer to take care of my family for generations to come.

See what good I could do with it helping others.

Go from there.

Assuming I won solely or shared and still took home hundreds of millions

1. Not buying but hire a Trust Attorney and Financial Advising staff
2. 3 cars - Ferrari 458 and M5 for myself and Land Rover LR4 for the wife
3. Beach house to live in while #4 is being built
4. Build my dream home on a few acres of lake front property
5. 120' Yacht

I hate playing this game.

Love these lists! I totally agree on the lawyer/financial advisor part. I was just focusing on the "fun" stuff. I'd def do some charity too, but likely a bit down the line, after I was settled.

After lawyers, investments and proper planning and protection....

Start a production Co.

Open a vintage watch and accessories store/gallery for my photography

Build a ranch on a very large piece of land in Idaho or Montana (wife loves Yellowstone).

Create a charity to help foster the arts and arts education.

Start or buy an independent manufacture in Switzerland.

love it

Drive down to my p car dealer and buy the silver 911 turbo s on the lot and drive it to NYC with my fiancé and shack up at the Waldorf Astoria (for the Cellini not the rooms ) until I can clear the funds and buy a place on the park that feels like a suburban house inside.

Buy a GF with the globe on it

Use the remainder to buy oil futures 2 years out at 100 strike price. Let's turn it into bill gates money just kidding real estate and charity work most likely

Pay off the mortgage!
Buy a modest vacation home
Buy a new car for the wife and I
A couple of watches
Save for my kids and their kids
Pay for people in line at the grocery store every now and then

One thing I would do is actually something that my friend's boss does. He is worth a few hundred million dollars. He will pick up the check at any restaurant he is in for anyone in Military uniform. I guess one time a group of about twenty five soldiers came in, and he said... "Oh Sh.t"... But picked up the tab anyway

I would:
1. Hire a great team of attorneys
2. Get a new phone number (unlisted, of course)
3. Buy a chunk of Coronado Island (San Diego) overlooking downtown
4. Buy a Ferrari, Boat, etc.
5. Setup college funds for kids of friends, and other charity work.

After setting up a trust for me an my family, I'd pay off my parents home and other properties, and then I would set up a few charitable organizations. One for feeding the hungry here in the US. Another for dog rescues. And another to help the refugees fleeing Syria.

Buying material goods would certainly come but I wouldn't be in a hurry when I can start helping so many others in need first

How about my first 6 priorities:

1) Hire a Lawyer to handle our estate and set up a new Living Trust and Will…
2) Give money to everyone in my family so they do not have to work…
3) Give money to everyone on my wife's side of the family so they do not have to work…
4) Make a donation to S.I.U.(Southern Illinois University), only to be used in the Plant and Soil Department so they can use it for research or new facilities or new Labs for the classroom…
5) Make a donation to the Chicago Botanic Gardens so they can properly 'Tag' all trees and shrubs on the grounds and for research…
6) Make a donation to my wife's Church...

1. Buy a new tow vehicle for the Airstream. ( Possibly the Merc in post #7. )
2. Add a room to the cabin.
3. Maybe a SS Explorer I.

That's about it. Put 20 mil in my pocket and give the rest to charities and churches.
My lifestyle is what I want it to be and I already have too much stuff.

Unfortunately I've already got the estate attorney and financial advisors. The obligatory family trusts. Set up charities etc... The first selfish big purchase would be ceramic Pepsi gmt, white Roman day date II, the slate dialed yg Sky dweller, and the yg my II. Then whatever the wife and kids want. Eventually a sports car and a boat.

RENT RENT RENT

not looking to take on perpetual expenses

ie never buy anything that flys, floats or f@&ks.

I would immediately payoff all existing debt of the family and myself then rent a nice beach front piece of property for a time to get my head around it...maybe I leave maybe not:)
