I am with the opposite crowd.

Maybe the whole "do NOT put the whole watch into an US-cleaner" is an urban myth.

Has anyone really tried it? No heresy.

When I took my Cartiers to the AD they would put the whole watch in the ultrasonic cleaner and it did not hurt.

Read above. I do it every few months - gmtii, dj2, Daytona for several years.

They all still keep time fine.

But by all means, wrap your "tool" watch in cotton and put it in the safe.

When I bought my first Rolex I was an 18 year old kid (1985), and I bought a new stainless Datejust with fluted silver tapestry dial on a Jubilee bracelet. I wore that watch daily for a decade, and used an ultrasonic cleaner on it a couple of times a month (also used it on my dad's Rolex). When I foolishly traded it for an Omega after nearly fifteen years, it had never been serviced and still running within 15 seconds a day. As i got older I had read that it's not recommended and stopped doing so, and I understand the reason why, but I frankly don't think there's much danger in it and these watches are quite a bit more stout that we give them credit for. Lots of us hit golf balls, shoot guns, and hammer nails with a Rolex on the wrist on a daily basis, and I find it hard to believe that a minute or two in an ultrasonic cleaner is any more harmful. I still use an ultrasonic to clean my bracelets, and it's scary how much junk builds up in just a few weeks. This anecdote is to neither endorse or condemn the practice, but my own experience. YMMV.

If I want my watches clean, I just hang them on a trees branches and let the wind and rain do the work, so I don't have to.

Seriously, how dirty are you getting your watches that a toothbrush doesn't do the job? Mud runs, oil field work, birthing animals?

I put mine in my wifes US cleaner every few weeks best way to clean it IMO. I have done it with all my watches and never an issue. Couldnt imagine that little vibration doing anything.

Yes, every three months, I take the followings steps to clean my YM Blue:

1) make sure crown is screwed down.
2) spray WristClean (Veraet) on entire watch and bracelet and let sit for 90-seconds
3) gently brush over entire watch with soft bristle toothbrush
4) add one teaspoon of SharperTek Ultrasonic Jewelry cleaner to ultrasonic tank
5) add two cups warm water to ultrasonic tank
6) set 180-seconds on timer on SharperTek XP-Pro Model CD-3800A.
7) turn on and gently place entire watch in tank for first 90-seconds
8) after 90-seconds, raise watch in tank to only submerge bracelet for remaining 90-seconds
9) ultrasonic cleaner turns off after 180-seconds
10) rinse watch in bowl of clean water.
11) dry off watch with towel.
12) repeat every 90-days

I have used ultrasonic cleaning unit on my Rolex since 2012.

Wear your clean watch in good health!

I can't imagine what would cause a watch to get soooo dirty that it would warrant an ultrasonic cleaning. I have had mine in the ocean....muddy....you name it...and a simple trip in the shower with some soap has resulted in getting them back to looking as good as new.

I also don't think that an ultrasonic cleaner could cause damage to a watch or movement...so if that is your prefered method to clean, I can't imagine it hurting anything.

From personal observation. Even the most careful and through cleaning with brush and soap almost always still leaves oils and debris between the links and in crevices not reached by the brush. An ultrasonic session almost always still brings out dirt and grime.

I like US cleaners for the bracelets...no toothbrush is getting that gunk out.

I think I've had mine done once. I'll have to check with my AD. I don't think the whole watch went in. I got it back and there were marks on the case back. Haven't noticed anything wrong with my watch. who knows... Don't know why I gave it to them to clean when they offered. I hardly wear the watch anyway. I won't do it again.
