Flicking through my 1990 Rolex catalogue, it appears that the watches on offer were more subdued. What I mean by that is that you had the classics as now, but only a few models had the diamonds drippping off them.

Look at the Rolex website now and in some models every other watch has about 400 plus gems attached. Who buys these things? The odd dictator in a ravaged African Nation comes to mind. Even the now defunct former glorious leader of Iraqi had a YG DD President minus the bling.

Is Rolex in danger of being seen by the wider public as a 'Bling Bling' product?

Yes! I think rolex is starting to lean alittle to much toward bling.

IMHO the old model more STUNNING than the new model. I more like the alumunium for bezel than ceramic.

I would prefer to see Rolex change it's look more along these lines.

Classy, subdued, gorgeous IMO.

Might be one of the only good things to come out of the Credit Crunch in that Rolex drops the 'Bling..Bling' lines.

Did you hear the true story about when Sadamn was in charge of Iraqi, he would get Rolex to make up a load of SS/YG DJ's, but instead of the standard gold face, it had a picture of him.

Imagine if you were the poor unfortunately Army Officer that turned up at his meetings without it on. No doubt the President would reach for his holster.

AJF.

I don't think the YM-II belongs in that bling category as the others do. Think of that watch in stainless steel. The countdown complication is a true break through, in terms of yacht race timing, whereas the others are simply diamond encrusted hunks of tackiness.

Goes back to my point about who is buying them.

Are there really that many tasteless people in the world?

Sadly probably yes.
