Rolex cost over time

I thought it might be interesting to try and figure out the cost of a Rolex relative to US per capita income data [% of per capita] over say the last 10, 20, 25 years. We would need TRF members to provide new watch cost data---from memory or maybe someone has the data already. We could choose a couple of standard models--AK,SS DJ or SUB perhaps. Below is the per capita income data link--

http://www.ofm.wa.gov/trends/tables/fig101.asp

I will put data together......

You can go to Sheldon's website and he has the price list of Rolex going back 30+ years

I was inspired by the Che controversy- earlier posting- and wondered how affordable Rolex watches have been over the years. Maybe the proliteriate could afford them in days gone by.

They have always been comparatively expensive, but nothing like they are today, as a percentage of average income.

Update

I realized I needed to use the non inflation modified income so I found this data--

http://www.senate.michigan.gov/sfa/E...onalIncome.PDF

My first finding is that Rolex prices do not go down!
I will post info on AK, Exp II, DJ SS and SS Sub tomorrow.
Goodnight.

I remember seeing a SS DJ in 1989, brand new from AD for $1895, now it's $6400. Has your salary or houly rate gone up by 337%. Example is you were making 25K in 1989, are you making 84K today, if not that is how much you should be making to afford a rolex comfortably.

Assuming you could afford a Rolex "comfortably" in 1989 on a $25K salary!
