I have both but if I could only have one it would be the sub without a doubt. You can swim with it and also wear it with a tux.

There's little doubt the Sub is more versatile, and a more robust watch. It looks fine dressed up, or down, the IWC isn't really a sport watch, and might suffer from shocks and minor abuses the Sub would shrug off. Also, personally, I'd be a little paranoid about getting the IWC wet, and I don't like wearing a watch I can't swim in. I like the IWC, but not for an everyday watch.

I own a Rolex but I have bought 2 IWCs for my husband. Between the two you have posted, I would pick the IWC. You can dress up or down the IWC, the only thing that you can't do is go swimming, while you can do that with the sub.

Sub C
Especially if you have a small wrist. IMO, 42mm with thin bezel look way too big for my 7 inch wrist. And it's a rolex |

The look at the movement of the Portuguese is truly stunning.
It doesn't hold its value as well as a sub though. |

Of those two - the Portuguese is almost a no-brainer to me. Two totally different classes of timepieces.

I don't own a Sub C but I do own the IWC Port 7 Day and I have to say it has become my favorite semi-dress watch (for me at 42mm its a little too big for proper dress). Goes with everything. Its classic, elegant, light weight and comfortable. It is on the thick side for a dress/semi-dress watch (15mm) so if you wear tailored shirts, make sure you wear it when being fitted. It requires a slightly larger cuff diameter to look right and be comfortable. Sub C is a great looking watch too so you really can't loose. Please excuse the low-quality, iphone pic.

Its not shocking to me that the responses overwhelimingly favor the Sub-C, given this is a Rolex forum. Both are beautiful watches but I tend to agree with what's already been said by others. The two are really quite different in terms of appearance with the Sub-C being more rugged, and the IWC looking a bit more dressy relatively speaking. That being said, the IWC is certainly far more rare to see than the Sub-C which is by far the most ubiquitous watch in its price range; however, this is a blessing when it comes to resale if that factors in because in that regard Rolex is king.

I would go with the IWC if you plan on adding to the collection. If you plan on sticking with only one, which I highly doubt, than perhaps the Sub will be more suited for everyday, anywhere everywhere all day watch.

If you're planning to use it as a formal watch, I'd go for the IWC, it has great wrist presence, very cool to look at movement, also the movement is a in-house 7 day movement.

IWC looks more classy. Sub C a bit more casual/sporty. Both are good on suit and casual of course. But it depends really what lifestyle and job that you are doing. In my case, I have lots of meeting in my job, most of our board of directors and CEO are wearing classy(with leather straps) and sophisticated watches like IWC, Patek, etc. It would be a bit weird to see them wearing sporty watches like Sub C though... well, like I said it depends on lifestyle and your personal preference of course.

I would love the IWC if I could fit it on my wrist

OP: I'd say Sub and the lume is probably the biggest reason. But if you are set on an IWC I'd suggest the Yacht Club Chronograph. That's closer to the Sub in the Portugieser family. Though the Aquatimer line is their version of dive watches so from a diving tool perspective you should be shopping there. |

Sub for me... Not a huge fan of that IWC, and their watches are typically a little large for my liking.

For pure horology, that iwc has the largest automatic movement and one to admire from the case back.
I've had iwc on my wrist and disliked the thickness, especially for dress. Submariner all the way. |
