What's with this "Character" BS?
Okay guys,
I've read several posts where guys come up with "these scratches I've acquired over the years, have given my watch 'character' " or "my first scratch - new character to my watch"!! What a load of hogwash!! What the hell have scratches and dents in a beautiful acquisition got to do anything with "character"? I thought "character" was associated with a person and his personal self - not bloody scratches on a beautiful watch!! So, as far as I'm concerned, "character" has absolutely nothing to do with any kind of damage to any of my Rollies. For starters, I would go truly ballistic if any of my watches sustained a truly visible scratch and the last thing on earth I would ever consider that to be is friggin' CHARACTER!!! Okay, rant over! JJ

Well, to each his own but in this case I agree with you JJ! I've taped the back of my iPod to prevent it from scratching. The time I smashed my Sub against a solid steel post I almost burst out in tears (I actually did after I saw the repair bill ).

So if you willfully plotted to scratch someone else's watch, and were successful, would that be charactor assasination?

Only my old Airking has any character I guess. My SUb & PAM must just be boring, characterless watches

I have a few scratches that won't buff out. It bothers me a bit when I see them, which isn't too often. Nobody else can see them, and even if they were able to, who cares? That's life.

I agree, I treat my car the same way. That is why I have walked to work everyday since I got last year, it is only 12 miles. But the fact that I did not want to give my nice shoes character, so of course I walked in bare feet.
It is a watch, scratches and the like happen. You talk about how tough your watch is all the time, how would you know? Maybe it is very fragile and you just don't know it. I don't know anyone that scratches their Rolex or any high end watch in purpose. The term character just means that shite happens. It can be polished by a jeweler or at service, then it will look like new. I have a hammer that is tougher than anything, but I would never use it, it might get scratched. Wear it and enjoy it, it is not supposed to be accurate to the nano second, not supposed to look new ten years from now. YMMV, but this is MHO.

All I'm trying to say is that I would not associate a scratch as having any association with the word "Character". Makes on sense to me at all. JJ
