Finally back from service at the Rolex Service Center in Tokyo

On this fine Spring day, I took off from work and went to the RSC in Tokyo to pick up my 116528, which had been there since 4 March. It's nice to have it home again.

BTW, I asked whether I would be allowed to switch the dial/hands on my new Explorer to the new "Basel 2016 dial" later this year. They didn't say no. They just said they don't have any information on the new watches yet.

Thanks. I really love this watch. Having had a Day Date in one form or another for a very long time, I'm finding I prefer this watch to the Day Dates. I guess I'm just a Daytona guy through and through.

That's an interesting Rolex Service Pouch, I haven't seen that style before. It looks like it would not retain the watch as well as the press-stud closure service pouches...has Rolex cheaped out on us?

No issue. It's an F series from around 2006 and it had never been serviced. I decided I had pressed my luck long enough.

Was thinking the same thing - shouldn't a pouch for a $25k+ watch be a bit more secure ?

Steve, RSC Tokyo has been using these pouches for many years. With the clasp closed, the watch sits tight on an insert and the pouch sleeve is tucked in. I have several of these from over the years. I use them for moving around with my watches and have never had a problem. I find it an easy way to carry a watch in my front pocket when traveling.

Very nice! do you have a "before" picture? Did it have many scratches/swirlies when it went in?

I don't really have any good before-after photos. The watch still looked to be in pretty good shape when I took it in for service. In some photos I've posted, scratches might be seen if you look closely, and there was a lack of high polish on the bezel and some of the links, but the scratches were minor. With my gold watches, I've found gold masks/overpowers scratches far better than with stainless steel and thus I usually don't notice the scratches unless I look closely. The thing that began to bother me, however, was that after about ten years, the satin finish on the links had started to become smooth, almost polished in some areas. Also, I noticed in winding the watch, that there seemed to be more resistance than in the past. Finally, over last summer and the fall/winter, I had suddenly accumulated a lot of minor scratches on the clasp. So, since I had recently bought a new Day Date 40 and an Explorer and was infatuated with them, I decided it was a good time for service.
