Mall Jeweler Compliments your 'Invicta' when it's a Rolex. You say?
So I went to a budget mall with the GF yesterday. I went in to a 'jeweler' in the mall that typically is known for selling Tag Hueur as their top brand. There was nothing in the mall close to a toy store for me, so I ended up here as the closest thing to a toy store I was going to get.
They didn't have much in line of Tag so I just started browsing, then he kinda stopped and said with a cocky smirk, 'Nice Invicta, where'd you get it?' I think this was kind of in response to me not salivating over his Tags. I didn't give him a glance at my watch, which is a 116710LN. I just said, 'oh this one? I forget where I picked it up.' I just got my first Rolex a little over a week ago and my first compliment was calling it an Invicta. I wonder if there is an Invicta out there that looks like a GMT? I didn't want to sound like a snob or ungrateful, so I just went with him on it being an Invicta. Hypothetically, how would you have responded? Edit: I wasn't offended, just an amusing anecdote I thought I'd share with my new fav forum |

Im not sure if he new it was a rolex and was just messing with you or he really thought it was an invicta.
Either way your response was well delivered. Im not so smooth with my responses. Would have probably said something like "if you have to ask you probably cant afford it."

"your mom gave it to me, ask her"...
"oh, you mean you this $8500 rolex?" (with the "you can't have none" chant kids used to do) "invicta? is that made by tag heuer?" |

I always check out the Movado. Outlet at one of the malls I go to, I always look at the Ebels but never try them on, I've always wanted one of their divers and I had just enough to buy one since they were heavily discounted. The staff seemed irritated to help and then magically changed their attitude as they looked at my watch after I set it down lol still might buy one, but had the buying experience been better, I probably would already have

I would have said what's an Invicta? I've honestly never even heard of the brand aside from being here.

It's just a watch
Whether the guy was clueless or a jerk, doesn't really matter in the grand scheme |

I would have thanked him for his complement. I wear my watches to tell time not to let other people know what brand it is.

i agree good job with that response
if he genuinely thought it was an invicta then its not his fault and no need to be rude back and if he did know what it was than you are the better man by not rising to his bait

Funny that your first compliment was on your "Invicta."

Yeah just brush that off. He isn't a watch aficionado obviously. Walk into the stores that carry the brand or know there stuff and they could spot it easily.
Anyways...Invicta hardly makes anything in 40mm as the stuff on TV I see is in the upper 40 low 50's size wise. |

In some people's minds, Invicta watches are nice. So, I think it was likely a benign comment. Actually, I have had the opposite occur to me where somebody thought I was wearing a Rolex and it was really a Breitling.

That was a very classy response. My mall has some pretty amazing jewelry stores and even the crappy ones have a few nice pieces of jewelry so I won't knock you for that.
As far as myself, I have two sets of friends, the ones that I grew up with and enjoy being around and the ones that I do business with and deal with on a professional level. They are literally worlds apart both financially and intellectually - The very first time I wore my Rolex hanging out with my old friends I got smacked with the Invicta compliment and I had to listen through a Michael Kors success story. I was annoyed for the first ten seconds but then I realized not everyone shares the same interest or the same knowledge and that maybe I spend too much time on TRF. As long as you feel happy wearing the GMT, nothing else should matter.

Mistaking a breitling for an invicta makes sense. Rolex for breitling is a head scratcher.

Somerset is a nice mall. No PP or AP, but plenty of Rolex and Omega type watches.

Maybe you should flip your GMT for an Invicta and get some of that Mall jewelry store street cred back.
A coworker of mine has an Invicta and every time he sees me he mocks me with the cost of my Sub vs the cost of his Invicta. Different strokes. Neither is right or wrong. The funny thing is that if someone wore an Invicta to a Rolex Forum Meetup, I bet you that we would be just as considerate towards them as anyone else. And refrain from mocking them for not having an expensive timepiece. Not so much the other way around. Rolex wearers always get pounded by people who don't understand watches. |

I would have pretended to not speak English and slowly backed out of the store.
