I've got friends who get a $7 dollar Starbucks coffee every day of the week. They also smoke two packs a day. There is another $12 a day too. That's here. That same two packs in New York is probably twice as much.



Add all that up for a couple of years. All they have for that money is extra weight and maybe diabetes. They have also increased their cancer risk by a substantial margin.



I'm not anti smoking. People can do what they like. It's their life and health.



I'm just making a point for financial impact.



If you can afford it then buy it and enjoy it every day. Life is just too short.

This is absolutely spot on. We can't all afford a WG Sub (me included by a long way btw) but would still love one. I have a friend who doesn't get the why would you spend £5000 (approx) on a watch when that's the price of a car, a few years old with large mileage car probably too and no doubt mechanical issues not far away! She isn't a Swiss watch fan so doesn't understand that you lose loads on cars especially the more you spend on one. I love cars and Rolex watches but I know where the sensible money would go. Enjoy your WG Sub if you get it it's beautiful. Good luck!

As a general philosophy, when considering a purchase of any sort, I don't care about absolute cost, but only my perception of personal value. If I want something and can afford it, I'll naturally get the best price I can, but spend zero time wondering if it's "worth" it.

Life is short; do and buy everything that takes your interest.

I think you should sell the watches you have and get the smurf. It really will be the only watch you will need and wear. A life the enjoyment of wearing the watch is nothing compared to 25k.

Then, the pure pleasure sets in and let me tell you, I would do it again and again!

Do it, you only live once.

Now I am looking at adding a Platona to my collection and am feeling the same disbelief I had when I got my BLRO. BUT I know once I pull the trigger, I won't be disappointed. After all, it will be pure Rolex perfection.

$25k is for a pre-owned.

More if you bought it new.

I got mine brand new...but then I have never traded in or sold off any of my watches so really I have not lost any money :)

For me the best koolaid is:

1) The money you spend on purchasing the smurf is tantamount to it sitting in a non-interest bearing checking account.

2) The cost of wearing it is equal to insurance, maintenance and anything you'd lose in the sale.

3) Assuming you keep the watch for five years and then sell it, I doubt the cost would be more than a $150/month.

4) The longer you keep it, the less it costs.

5) Considering what I piss far more than 150/month on, the purchase becomes nearly negligible.

Think about the de appreciation value and not about the actual cost. that always helps to make a decision. I bought my ND Sub 5.4K and I sold it 4.8K after 7 years. Of course, now I cannot make my mind on which will be the next one.

I have really enjoyed reading all of the responses here. Honestly, I think I am going to own one someday. I am working very hard at the moment to advance my career. There is a specific milestone I am aiming for, and I think if I get there then I will pull the trigger. I don't know about trading my GMT toward it. I want to try to keep it since it was my first Rolex. There was a thread here recently and a lot of people regretted trading their first.

My opinion is simply this:

If the cost bothers you more than your desire, do not buy it.

If you can possibly live with the price now, and it is always on your mind...you should buy it as it will become more cherished to you as time passes.

Now that $25k is on your radar, you will receive a new perspective on what that money means to you. Once clear make your move, or just go for it and trust that the value of Rolex's and gold will increase or at least stay stable. If this watch is worth less than $18-20k at any time, most likely we all have more to worry about than money.
