Hi to you all.This is my first post and happy to be on board.

I am looking at buying my first Rolex shortly.It will be a sub date or a gmt11 and i have been tossing up between the two.Yesterday it would have been the sub date but the day before it was the gmt.Have a few watches but would love a rollie.Anyway just thought i would introduce myself and look forward to participating in the forums.

As you can see from my avatar my other love(or one of them) is my motorcycle.Talk to you all soon.

Thanks guys.Have the chance to buy a gmt11 now or wait 2 weeks for the sub date.What do you think??
Is one a better option as a first rollie?? I love them both and they are the same price.I suppose i want the one that screams Rolex,as well as one i can wear to work (suit and tie) as well as casual with jeans and a t-shirt.AD also has a Panny 210 radiomir which is stunning.Had a Panny 111 which i sold (argggh) so the rollie is next on the list.

Hi Silverman. Welcome to TRF. If you're undecided about which watch to get, I suggest trying them one right after the other to see which one smiles at you the most. Good luck with the decision.
BTW, your avatar is a little fuzzy and I can't quite make out your motorcycle. I think I've got it down to three posssibilites. Could you please tell us what it is?

Welcome to TRF, Silverman. Glad you found your way to our friendly little madhouse. Don't be shy. Jump right in and post away.

I'd give you my recommendation, but I am slightly less than objective when it comes to the best Rolex to get, as you can see from my avatar.

Paulie is right, though. You need to test drive both the GMT and the Sub and see which one calls to you louder. That will be your first one. Then a couple months later, you can go back and get the other one. That way you don't have to decide which one to buy. You only have the more difficult decision of which one to wear every day.

Sweet ride !! I usually ride my black Harley with my Seiko black monster.Saved me buying a clock for the bike because at night nothing glows like the monster does.Its also a great knock- about watch.

I will try to work out how to post better photos i promise but you get the idea.

I actually put twisted stainless steel,polished spokes on and that hubcap detracted from the look so off it came.

Now if i could just get a rollie sub/gmt to match the bike i would be a happy camper.Decisions,decisions.

Welcome to the forum, Im a newbie myself, and have already found tons of great info. on Rolex here. I would be a little biased in recommending between the two, see my avatar, but maybe you could consider what is of more usefulness, multiple timezones or diving extension. I travel frequently between east and west coast, so the GMT was an easy decision. One day, I hope to have both though.

Glad to have you hear Silverman, welcome to TRF. I have to disagree with Johnny's above statement though, I am wearing a 210 right now and it glows like a torch and all through the night.

Either Rolex would be a good choice, and also scream Rolex if that is what you are looking for. Best of luck.

I have to be honest and say i dont dive much and the 2nd time zone function wont be much benefit either.I am buying one purely for looks and because i really want a Rolex.Always have.

I also have an orange monster to keep the black one company and i have to say the Pam 111 i had glowed bright,but not like the monsters.Apparently there is also a yellow and blue faced monster,mmmmm.

But ideally i would like to try the sub date and the black bezel gmt11 back-to-back but they only have the gmt in stock.If i order the sub date i have to put a deposit down on it now pretty much so thats the dilemma i have i am sure i would be delighted with either.Really like the red hand on the gmt.

Getting a 15% discount too which is good.Works out to about US$4300.One other dealer said he would give me 20% discount on the gmt(in stock) but nothing on the sub date(out of stock).

Honestly you can't go wrong with either, so if you have one that screams at you a little louder make the jump. Both are iconic.

My AD also has a 210 in stock and its a beauty.Exactly the same price as the sub date/gmt.My 111 uses 24mm straps but the 210 uses 26mm so the straps i got are useless for the 210.

Question;if you could only have one would you pick the 210 over a sub date/gmt??? Tough choice.Love that 45mm dial. Thank god they dont have the 190 there,my girl would kill me.

If I could have only one, it would be my YM, the real one that is SS/PLT. Even though I rarely wear it, about once every two weeks, it has some value to me. I love my 210 and also my 162. I am much more a Panerai guy at heart, but if you are yearning for a Rolex, get one now. Otherwise you will still feel like you have to get one later.

I have gone through every model in the Rolex lineup at one time or another (except the Daytona) and have found them to be too common or something else. But if I did not do that, I would still want one and be searching. Get either the sub or gmt and you will be well on your way, they are great watches.

Now a 190 is a different story, I would take that one over any of the three that I have now.

Agreed.The 190 is pretty special but so is your ym.Same sort of price too.So you would get a 190 over a ym?? Big call. I know the subs are fairly common but the ym wouldnt be.One hell of a watch is the ym.

As i said if they had a 190 at my AD today i would have been sleeping in the dog house tonight.At least the 190 would be keeping me warm !!!

Hi Silverman,

A BIG welcome to TRF. I'm JJ, also from downunder (NZ) and am very happy to read yours posts which are pretty lively.

Now given the choice between the Sub-date and GMT-II, I would say the latter is more practical for use. But given that you're not interested in the timezone feature, then take the Sub-date 16610 in the blink of an eye. That is the ULTIMATE Rolex, the icon, the one that screams ROLEX all the way.

Try on both and choose the one you really like. BOTH are excellent timepieces and you will not go wrong either way...but the Sub-date is a cracker....here's mine next to my TT YM.
