At the core - I am a Daytona fan.

The Daytona does have its share of detractors.

For me - as a car guy the Daytona is the watch.

I love the rich history of the Daytona and the reflected glory of some of the giants that wore the Daytona.

I love the symmetry of the dial.

I love that it isn't ruined by having a date stuck at some crazy angle on the face throwing things off.

I love that it isn't some behemoth on the wrist. Panerai is the piece for a big watch.

The comfort wearing a Daytona is tops amongst the Rolex lineup IMO.

I love that it works casually and with a suit. (not with a tux though )

In a weird way the value equation of the Daytona has been fantastic. IIRC the SS Daytona was about $5k in 2000.

In 2008 I think it was $7900

Even though things will ultimately come back to reality once they become more available but the 116500 seems to be valued at over MSRP.

I don't even want to think about what a 6263 Daytona originally cost!

Not that these things should be considered investments but it doesn't hurt that you aren't burning a stack of hundreds when you get one.

These are some of the things that I just love about the Daytona.

That's exactly the sort of information I was looking for -- I really wasn't trolling; I was genuinely curious.

So, really, your interest stems from the watches' racing connections. Given that I know nothing about racing, that perhaps explains why they don't call to me. I do understand now: it's the racing version of the Submariner popularised by the Bond movies -- or (to me) the equivalent of the Pepsi in Air America/Magnum P.I. and the root beer in the Dirty Harry movies?!

Speaking of that value thing, is that driven by scarcity or popularity? (Or. both)?

SS Submariner no date 1992 (sold); SS GMT II 2007 (sold); SS GMT II C 2008 ('M' series) (sold); SS Sub C 2011 (sold); BB GMT 1971 (sold); Omega 50th GMT

Well said. I think it appeals to a lot of us "car guys." When mine comes in, I guess I'll find out if it's a 30 year keeper like my DJ. I should live so long....

I don't expect to be around in 30 years but here's to happy and healthy enjoyment of your 116500 when it arrives!

And yes Shedlock - much of the pricing is due to demand outstripping supply.

Early vintage pieces that are very expensive were unpopular originally. There just ain't that many of them out there.

Modern SS Daytona sold at a premium for years. TT and gold models and now the Platonas sell at discounts.

I once had a chance meeting with a Rolex rep when I was on the wait list for the white 116520.

Congratulated him on the brilliant strategy of deliberately holding back the # of SS Daytonas.

He told me it was a simple matter of them only have so many movements per year.

They made more money on the PM pieces so more Daytonas were made in TT or PM than SS. That's it.

He wasn't a dealer and/or trying to sell me anything so I have no reason to disbelieve him.

Daytona is a very sophisticated timepiece, IMO, and not for everyone.
