Rolex Remorse...

Couple of simple questions to liven up a dull Friday:

1. Which Rolex do you most regret buying?
2. Which Rolex do you most regret selling?

I most regret buying a Sub 116613LB which I traded for a loss (only lost the VAT, but it was still a 20% loss) two months after purchasing it new from my AD; it is one of the most stunning watches I’ve ever seen but it just didn’t suit me and deep down I knew it. I learnt a valuable lesson that buying a watch is about buying one that suits you, not just one that you like.

I most regret selling the GMT 116710LN which was the most comfortable watch I’ve ever worn, even more so than the Daytona which is extremely comfortable. The GMT function was also very useful. I sold it because it wasn’t getting any wrist time after I’d bought the Sea Dweller, but I didn’t really need to sell it and it would get wrist time now that the SD honeymoon period has worn off (still love it, but I have room for others now).

Buying something one day and regretting later shows that there is something wrong in the way you are approaching this hobby.

If you do your research, you will know whether you want it or not. If you are not sure, do not buy.

I have never regretted any purchase I have ever made in my life because I only buy what I truly want.

Possibly you should give Rolex a miss.

Regards

Mick

1. I bought any of my Rolex because I really wanted them, no regrets at all.
But if I could do it over I would only buy PM watches.
2. Not gonna sell any of them.

Some would argue that not having any regrets means never taking a chance. And not making any mistakes means never pushing the boundaries.

I currently have a Sea Dweller which I've had for over two years, and the new Daytona which I am very happy with. I'm about to go shopping for a Royal Oak which I've been researching for the past year. So, I'm pretty happy with my approach and not sure how anything I've done suggests I should give Rolex a miss?

But have I made mistakes, yep. Have I learned from them, yep. Will I probably make new mistakes, yep. This applies to every aspect of my life, and I'm pretty comfortable with that.

Different strokes I guess...

Thanks, Professor Hindsight. I'm sure the OP never considered this inspired pearl of wisdom.

Regretted selling my 16610 sub and then wasting my money on a brand beneath a Rolex when I should have just waited and saved.

You should add :

3. Which Rolex do you mostly regret NOT buying (at a certain point in the past)?

There will be plenty of stories on this.

You live and learn and hopefully you won't make the same mistake again.

Sensible people benchmark and emulate people who do things right. I am obviously doing something right because I have never had buyers remorse but if you want to take the p*** then fine.

Yes there is some truth in that. However we all have gambler friends who place bets, lose and then regret it. It is all about risk and whether you can live with the consequences.

I am probably more cautious than most and only buy what I truly want. That way my bank balance is always healthy and I am not remorsing over something I regretted buying.

I have four Rolex and am pleased with all of them.

What if you think you truly want a watch, research, ponder, obsess over it for X years, sell a watch to get it, then when you get it and live with it day in day out you begin to realise you don't love it as much as you thought and start regretting the purchase?

Just a hypothetical scenario, Mick, what now?!

Hi Evad3

I think there is a difference between buyers remorse, i.e bought it last week and now regretting it as a big mistake and keeping something for several years and now thinking its time for a change.

We all change our cars after a couple of years but we don't regret buying them.

+1 to this. Awesome quote.

I most regret buying the 216570 after selling a 116610.
Ended up selling the 216570 to buy back a 116610!

Now my heart yearns for the new 116500.

Life for me is a journey, with some right turns and some wrong turns. If I make more right than wrong, and get all the big ones right, then all good.

I know one thing for sure, if I hadn't taken chances, taken the occasional gamble, and made some wrong turns, I would never have come close to being able to own a Rolex.

I don't have any debt. I have a healthy and happy family. My business is doing well. And I have good friends. If I gamble with the occasional purchase, no drama.

Equally, I appreciate that we are all different and if a safer approach works for you, then that's cool...there are occasions when I envy that approach!

Have you seen the episode of Talking Watches on Hodinkee with John Mayer? This is one of my favourites, anyway he said he regrets his first 12 watches!

Maybe 12 is an exaggeration and maybe this is not everyone's experience, but if you feel regret about a purchase you are definitely not alone. For me, having a living, breathing collection in which you trade in and out watches is part of the fun. With every adjustment you are working towards perfecting your collection.

Don't let it phase you, in my opinion and speaking from personal experience, it's a normal, natural part of the process. It's a marathon with no finish line.

I understand the outlook of making mistakes and regret on the watch buying and selling. When I was early in my watch flipping I looked at things in terms of winning or losing. " I got a great deal, I moved a watch that was not the best, this is a watch that I will keep forever, etc." As I have gotten further into this hobby I have taken the attitude that I enjoy owning many different types of watches and I even make purchases knowing that I will not keep the watch long term. I always wanted a Rose Gold Daytona, bought it, wore it, flipped it. Not a big deal. Many times I think our competitive nature gets involved in the watch owning. That is ok, but if you look at it as a competition I found that I miss a lot of the fun of owning, buying, selling and most important wearing the watches. Buy what you want, flip when it suits you and have fun. Now the answer to the original question is the same. Rolex Platinum Day Date II. When I want it back I will buy it but it is a question of how much of a collection can you have tied up in one watch.

No remorse here. I'm happy with what I have and past trades are all still agreeable to me. I'm lucky I guess.

It's a great question, but a real 'first world' wis problem, afterall try explaining to a non-wis why you have more than 1 watch in the first place!!. I hope it doesn't descend into a slanging match as it's a good thread. For me, I miss my Rootbeer, Coke GMT and Blue sub, but I love my Big Block and my full-set Gt White is incredible.

I don't regret buying anything as I take my time and really weigh up if I really want a piece, I'm not an impulse buyer as I like a good deal too much. Of those I sold the only one I wish I had kept was my orange Planet Ocean, but even then I sold it to help start me on this Rolex and TRF journey and I would not have that any other way. I'll buy the PO back again I'm sure.

I regret not buying a M serial sub for $3,500 when I stumbled upon one at a jewelry store... about a year later I bought mine for $5,000.
I regret buying a 36mm datejust a year or two back, it's way too small for me. My wife now wears it a couple times per week.

I think some of you guys are taking this question a bit too seriously. Where not talking about major life changing decisions here, simply whether or not you regret a watch purchase.
