New'b question

Had kind of a silly question. I just inherited my fathers 1979 Day-Date and was just wondering if there was any difference in owning one that's 37 years old versus one that would be store bought today. I'm sorry to say I don't know much about Rolex.

P.S. Just to be clear, I have no interest in knowing what it's worth or selling it, I would just like to know more about the history behind it and if there's anything special about it since it's from that time period. And yes I already know it's plenty special cause it belonged to my dad.

I'm not a DD expert, by any means, but I think the two major differences would be the double quick movement found in the modern models and the bracelet.

And the price, of course.

Major differences that come to mind:

• Quickset v. Double Quickset: Ability to change the DAY and DATE independently. Moderns have this feature.
• Crystal: Acrylic (yours) v. Sapphire (modern)
• Dial: Modern ones have the lume inside the hour markers v. yours which has a lume dot on the outside of the hour markers.

I currently have the watch being serviced but I have a picture of the face of the watch before I sent in. I also have the presidential bracelet with it. Also, is there anything unique about the dial? For instance is it possible that this dial is no longer made or the color is no longer available. Thank you all for your input. It's greatly appreciated.

That is a gorgeous reference, especially that blue dial. Just enjoy it.

Newer ones have some improvements to the movement but vintage pieces are highly desirable. If it runs well, it is a keeper IMO.

Wow! Thanks everyone! Yeah I really love the blue dial. I haven't seen many pictures with that blue dial. I've been reading that a desirable feature of these vintage pieces is that the patina match all around, so looking at the pictures I posted, I can see what they mean by that. I don't plan on getting the lume on the dots or the hands redone or the date and day numbers replaced. I want to keep it as original as I can. Any do's and dont's that anybody recommends I should request when getting it serviced in the future?

Rolex might insist on changing the dial for concern about the lume coming off. Find a good independent watchmaker - you never know they might be able to clean the lume up a bit. Also don't refinish, your dad obviously loved it and looked after it perfectly.

The gold band is the original band. The blue band is one he bought for it later on so it wouldn't be so "flashy". I personally love the gold band and don't mind a little "flash".
