Lots of great looking watches in this thread! Love seeing all the 16618's with the engraved rehaute.

Because it is unnecessary, redundant and a bit silly., that is what makes it awesome. I have been considering a white gold, but all the pictures of the yellow with the blue could be changing my mind...

I actually like the look of a gold Sub, especially with a blue dial. But I just can't consider a gold watch. I'd look at it and see two SS watches...

I'm a diver, and take my Sub (and Sea Dweller) diving with me every time I go sub-surface... however mine are SS models... I'd have a hard time diving a gold watch.

If you don't understand, then you're not ready for a PM watch no matter the brand. It took me a long time to understand and appreciate, and now have a WG sub and Platona. It comes with time. Enjoy the journey.

For me the yellow gold submariner with blue dial is by far my favorite PM Rolex. I will own one in the future. Right now I just have too many others on the list to get first. Lol

Great pictures guys. I'm never get sick of looking at him.

A friend and I were chatting (we both own Rolexes), and were discussing gold watches. He said...when you have the cash to buy a gold watch, yet you still buy a Rolex...

He's also the one who got me into fancy watches, that, when you look at it, it's silly how much we spend on them.

However, I didn't realize that a Gold Submariner, for example, hold it's values very well compared to other high end watch makers.

About the only other watchmaker that holds value like Rolex is Patek. I'm not sure even Vach and AP would fall into that category, but stand to be corrected.

A gold sub like the 16618 is simply jaw dropping gorgeous.
Even the blind can feel it's beauty.

Let's face it, there's nothing practical about a Gold Sub, it's purely a statement piece. A very Bold one at that!

I love the ones with a Diamond Dial. If anyone owns one, please post it.

However, I don't understand the popularity of the Gold Submariner. Do people take them diving? The submariner is probably my least favorite Rolex, unless used as an actual dive watch.

What am I missing? There are many other gold watches I'd prefer before the Submariner.
To be honest I agree...

You do not buy gold (yg, wg) sub for diving, you buy it for different reasons...reasons you won´t understand until you buy one

Go for it!

I take it you mean on straps here. In which case these are quite dressy and not really comparable to a sporty sub and have a totally different feel. If you mean a Nautilus on bracelet, they sure are nice but are at a different price point.

For me it is pretty much the dial. I have always loved blue dials and the sunburst blue is tops for me. When I had the TT Blue Sunburst, within days of selling it, I regretted doing so. I replaced it with this one.

I am not sure what the point of this post is. It is a futile argument.

What is to like about a precious metal Sub?

EVERYTHING

Paying less for a TT 116523 panda dial brand new Daytona than a used SS non ceramic - now that is screwed up!

They make gold subs and other tool watches in gold for one reason... they sell. Tool watches are not tool watches anymore. They are dual use jewelry and watches. Does it make sense that a dive watch is made in YG? Maybe not the most practical and affordable tool watch... but Rolex learned there is a market for gold Sub and other PM tool watches and the margins must be pretty good so they make them. People buy them because they want to. Don't need to over analyze it. Many people buy things that don't seem to be practical, but they buy them because they want them.

Luxury cars for example.... doesn't make cost effective sense but if you want to spend your money on one, be my guest.

The only PM watch on my radar is a DD40, but that is not close at all on my list for many years.

What`s the point of any expensive luxury watch? Any Casio does the job much cheaper and more precise....

People here put more money into watches than this because they (we) love watches. Gold watches are not for everyone and that`s fine. They are awesome!

Yeah...totally agree with Neil.

But, I fully admit, my tastes tend to run toward more sportier watches on metal, so I am clearly biased. The sub and GMT line...that's what gets my motor running.

Also, that's interesting about the crown guards on later models. Thanks for sharing.
