Icon20 Purple dial 16803 submariner two tone

I have a 1987 two tone sub with a very obvious PURPLE dial. Not a nipple dial. The watch has been verified authentic but I have been told by one dealer the purple was actually an option and it is not discolored or tropical. I have searched all over the internet and I cannot find good info anywhere to clarify the purple dial issue. I am trying to figure out if it is a stock option for the watch or it has in fact discolored.

Welcome to TRF!

It was never an option- perhaps it appeared purple to some under certain lighting.

Most likely it has faded.

Can we see a picture?

It's a discolored blue dial.

Never an option. It's prob just faded and has patina from age. A pic would help.

The dealer was grossly misinformed. It's patina.

The pic I uploaded actually shows a darker purple than it really is. The purple hue is brighter and it is even throughout the dial. The dealer said he recalled being able to get the purple dials back in the 80's. I have not took the watch apart to see if the dial was darker or blue under the bezel.

I like the purple and have gotten numerous compliments on it. I prefer the faded vintage. I like unique.

There is no more dial than what you see.

110% positive it was blue.

Purple was NEVER a dial option on a Sub. Certain older Subs the Blue ages into a dark Purple. Mine is a T serial 1996 and still is as Blue as the day I bought it 20 years ago. Not sure if it will ever change hue, some do some don't. Anyway the Purple hue is awesome!
