Would you call out a fake?

I have a buddy at work who likes to tell tall tales and everyone knows it. We've had discussions about Rolex since he often sees me on TRF. According to him he's had several over the years... I don't really mind him fibbing BUT today he came over and showed me his new 16610. One look and it was obvious it was a bad fake. When he took it off for me to hold it was really apparent how fake it was - weight, clasp, dial font, date numbers were not crisp. I simply congratulated him and said he had a nice watch. No need to call him out or burst his bubble. He even went as far as to say Ben Bridge authenticated it.

It got me thinking... Would you point out the fake or let it be?

I called out a fake on my BIL. He laughed loudly and said for 9 bucks he'd live with it.

A hotel manager was trying to hose me on a vacation package once, I called out his fake and added some character verbiage to the type of person that would wear a fake Rolex for all to see.

Otherwise, it's probably best to nod politely and move on. It's a fight you shouldn't pick without cause.

Call him out. Absolutely. In fact, I'd tell him it's fake, show him my Platona, pull out my Goyard wallet, and show him my stack of 100's and Am Ex at the same time. Then I'd tell him the Am Ex is for points only. If I dare charge anything, I send Am Ex the full balance, plus a 10% kicker each and every month it's used.

Ha! Good one sir.

I wish I owned a Platona to show him!

I would have called him out. Usually I wouldn't but If someone tried bragging about I'd blast him.

Ask to see his watch and pull the crown and see if it has a rubber o ring. Then wind it. A Rolex will make a nice shhh noise when being wound. All the fakes make a tick noise. Then Tell him he may want to get a new battery because his sounds broken. Now the best test is the wall test. Throw his fake Rolex hard against a brick wall and it will shatter in a million pieces and he will look at you strange. If it was real he will kick your ass on the spot. Then you know for sure.

And as far as calling people out what's the point. Let him talk all he wants because in the end he know it's fake so what does it really matter. You can't change the way people think so why even waste your time. I'm sure you have a enough of your own problems in life to worry about.

I wouldn't call someone out if it's on their wrist but if they removed it from their wrist to show it off, I would.

Maybe it's a test...i.e., testing your WISdom.

My best suggestion is to ask him to see it again tomorrow - and say, gosh they've sure lightened them up since they started using unobtanium in the factory...

I've been in this situation an few times and I never call out the person.

In two of those situations, the people showing me their watches admitted what they had when I showed them my Rolex.

The one time the guy kept up the ruse, I just complimented him on his taste and he went back to whatever he was doing.

People like that know what their doing and it's none of my business anyway.

I would never do because it will only embarrass the owner and you really have nothing to gain from it. You'll probably end up losing a friend over it.

I would probably just say "this kind of watch really isn't my style" and smile and nod so they know I know it's fake but not call them out in public

I was at an uncles house for a BBQ , the subject turned to watches ,so he brings out this omega that looked like no omega I had ever seen , I turn it over to look at the clasp and it had seamaster professional , except the word seamaster was spelt - " seamastei "

I just went along with it , until he asked me , you know about watches see if you can sell it for me , I just gave him a firm "no way!" Without explanation lol

Is that a Sky-Sea Dweller? Must be an undisclosed model.

Great stories guys. I guess the reaction depends on how the other person is acting and the situation.

I'll check if any trusted seller has the Sub-Dweller more commonly know as the Surf & Turf - C.

first, hope he doesn't know your TRF handle or he's gonna take your red swingline and put it in jello.

second, no. i would not call them out. in your situation, its good to know someones character and keep it to yourself for office general politics and such.

no different than the ladies who know who's got the fake LV or red soles and save it for a rainy day.

My opinion:

Not your watch, not your problem.

He obviously isn't buying for the right reasons and that for me is the end of the convo.

I like interest, not status

Maybe it's a test since he sees you on TRF all the time to see if you can recognize a fake? If he's truly a friend, you can call him out on it. I would never do it to a total stranger.
Friend of mine years ago showed me his 16610 being so proud of it. As soon as I saw it, I told him it was fake. He was shocked that I could tell and said that I really knew my watches, I don't really but the fake was really bad. He said he purchased it for $50 and wanted to see if I could tell the difference. We had a good laugh. He still wears the fake to this day.
