Sheikh Mohamed (the ruler of Dubai) gets it. He recognized very early on that modernizing, looking outward, and integrating with the west was the path to prosperity. Dubai as a destination has it all.

Tourism has been down the last year or so. The Chinese market is way down. The Russian market is in recovery, but still off. Hotel ADR's are down about 10%, which means there are holiday bargains to be had. A good travel agent should be able to negotiate package rates amenable to most any budget.

I don't find Dubai hote prices particularly cheap and alternate between Kempinski MOE, Ritz Carlton, Shangri La depending which is cheapest. The Armani and Four Seasons (cheapest room in February over $1000 p.n) continue to be more than rest of the world. I do concede that the rooms tend to be larger and for me separate shower is a must (standing in a bath showering is a no no). Of course many tourists forget that most hotels do not serve pork bacon and if that's important best check ahead

I think it could be hard to characerize hotel prices by only looking at very top-end places. My lodging here (considering hotel brand, service, location, room size, etc.) is downright cheap compared to HK. Granted, it's Sofitel not Ritz -- but they gave me a top floor room at a fair price

OK, that does it. I'm definitely getting a passport instead of the "passport card"!

We stayed at the Atlantis which I cannot recommend highly enough. Water park there is out of this world!

(It's also where I got to try on the Platona )

Can you speak Finnish perfectly? No? Then dont correct me on my fourth language. "Ho hum"? What does that even mean. What language is that? Certainly not english. Is it gramatically correct? I am aware of the details of the incident. Your post was pointless. I am not going there because I do not want to support a country with such backwards laws.

I have deliberately made some grammer mistakes in this post for your entertainment. Hopefully you will find them and feel better about yourself.

Just a thought, you might want to show a little more respect to Welsh, a moderator, founding member and repected leader of TRF. Oh, and read the rules about posting political opinions on this forum (they are not allowed). Frankly I think he showed restraint in not banning you, but that's just MHO. If you feel strongly about the political system/laws in a certain country, I repect your right to have those views and there must be thousands of forums you CAN express them; just not here.

Did I make any grammatical errors?

I dont have to respect anyone but I agree with the other points you made. This is not the place to bring up political opinions. I did enjoy the photos in this thread and I thank Steve for sharing them.

Oh yes you do... It's a fact of life, no matter how much you think otherwise!
You did make it political, and then personal, by insulting others (yes other members whom aren't happy with your generalized statement), and a moderator here. Still however, nothing but annoyance without appology.

Great pics Steve. Thank you for posting this as it had fallen off my radar. I did some research on vacation packages and there are some pretty nice deals to be had. There are some great golf courses there too!

Dubai is a very interesting city. I've been there a few times over the last 5 years and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. Just watching the cars pull up at the mall is highly entertaining. Saw three Bugatti Veyrons nose to tail one time.

Bugatti owners will tell you the cars are practically living, breathing things. Some research shows the cars are actually very social creatures. As you have witnessed, they like to get a good sniff of one another, like dogs.

My impression of Dubai, never having been there? The shopping "mecca" of the world.
