Pretty much what I had kind of thought really, but do appreciate you all taking the time to respond.

Buy new, not enough savings on the used. If you do have to wait 6 months for new, that's ok, you are investing in a lifetime watch investment.

Tend to put it on the rubber when casual at weekends and keep the leather for more formal occasions, weddings etc.

Gives 2 completely different looks to 1 watch

I contemplated this heavily on my first Rolex purchase. On my first Rolex purchase I went mint conditions. Watch was purchased 12/2015. I bought it 2 weeks ago. I saved about $600-$700 versus new. I bought it from a TS on here. The watch was in like new mint conditions. First couple of days I wondered if I should've just gone new...but oh well. On my second Rolex I plan to buy new. Will still buy from TS here versus AD because here in Miami big price difference. But yes will buy NEW. Considering a DJ2/DJ41 in the next 6-10 months.

If the wait is truly a few months for the Sub, if it were me (and you had a free weekend) I would find one in Europe, hop an Easyjet flight for a night, and buy it on the Continent. Maybe toss in a couple days of skiing while you're at it. May cost you a few hundred quid, but you'd have it in hand much sooner and it would be a cool memory.

This answered the same question for myself regarding an upcoming purchase of a 116710. If I can get a new one for $6800 from a trusted seller on here and a used one is $6500 even "mint" with all bits and pieces.....it just doesn't pencil out unless I am not thinking of. You guys just made my mind up. :)

if the difference is too minimal as people said, go for the AD! Myself never got the chance to buy from the AD... I found that buying mint with over 40% discount on some older PM models is a good bargain.

In theory yes, but most UK used prices don't seem to reflect that.

example: UK list £6250
VAT @ 20% = £1250
in theory making used price £5000 or less.

Cheapest I have seen ANY Sub C date on ebay is £5400 but generally they tend to be more in the £5500 to £5900 range for private sales and £6000+ from dealers which would mean VAT isn't being discounted even on watches that could be up to 5 years old.

I would say to shoot for a new watch. Especially since the price difference isn't as large. The few extra bucks you spend getting a new one will feel great when your the original owner.
