Strive to Be Different & Buy Something Other Than a Rolex

Those were the words conveyed by an AD to my nephew who showed me his new Omega co-axial DeVille this weekend. It's a beautiful watch in terms of overall styling and it's specifically engineered/designed for a minimal 10 year factory servicing interval.

He was initially shopping for a Datejust but his local AD did not have one in stock at the time. Being a somewhat impulsive young man with money to burn, he then wandered across the street to an Omega/Breitling/Baume & Mercier AD who immediately steered him towards the DeVille.

While he made a sound choice in terms of timepiece selection, it's somewhat amusing to hear various accounts of sales psychology. In this particular case, the Omega AD must have perceived a sense of individuality on the part of my nephew along with his inherent perception of Rolex as an exclusive brand.

Thus a watch sale was made and the Rolex AD lost out (for the time being).

There are plenty of great brands models outside rolex. However I'd always recommend a Rolex first then add others later. Individuality no doubt is a legit priority when making choices, but I don't think omega can compete as an all around time piece that balances luxury, refinement and grit.

i think you should buy what you like in terms of style/looks first. if you don't like the way it looks on your wrist, who cares if its a Rolex. There a plenty of good brands out there.

Actually buying Rolex is being different.
Don't follow the herd by buying anything else. Never take the easy option, don't follow the norm.
In the UK, Rolex has been rated as the top in product status and the most well known name for prestige.
Why buy anything else? Looks? Haven't noticed any watch to date that equals Rolex, they are either too fussy, over elaborate or too plain or weak looking or far too expensive together with a high depreciation rate.
It's got to be Rolex, unless you want to kid yourself!

If he was looking at a Datejust then he was unlikely to get much in the way of value retention either way. You can get a used 16233 for less than half the price of a new 116233 (I'm doing exactly that this week) and they are virtually the same watch.
Buying used is one of the best ways to enjoy value retention.

The DV is a fine watch, but no Rolex.
I have more respect for the salesman if he/she had suggested a Patek Philippe.

I've always liked Omega as a brand and the new movements are top notch. I never had one stick around long term though.

You can't go wrong with a Rolex great watches but saying that it's good to try other brands I myself want to start a collection with one watch per brand that I like. Don't want to be that guy who has loads of rolexs that are basically all the same watch just with slightly different dials bezels etc

Plenty of great choices out there of which Rolex is one. But no need to be a sheep and follow the herd if something great from another watch company catches your eye.

He can buy another brand watch not Rolex but he see the difference after he have first Rolex.
I try to be different and have only other watch brand, big watch brand like Breguet, Ulysse Nardin, AP and in the end in December 2016 I buy my first Sub TT and after I see the difference! In January I buy Sky Dweller rg:))
Every time when I have a problem with watch my watchmaker who put the watch at the machine to test it ask me: " Why you don't buy a Rolex and you don't have problem?"
Now I know what he want to tell me....
So, let him enjoy his watch and when a time come he will see...
