He have a good skill, but sound not too Stones for me.
For example his solo guitar in Wild Horses, too heavy for that song.
Stones music is light, but much energy and sexy.

Charlie Watts. In most bands the motor driving the music is the rhythm section, bass and drums. In The Stones, it's Charlie and Keef!

You can't touch the early stones stuff when Jones was with them.

My father's aunt actually threw Mick, Keef and Brian out of hew house thinking they were scruffy hipsters. My father's cousin knew them quite well, also the Beatles and was very, very close friends with Lonnie Doneghan!!!!!!

As for Ron, he is a great musician and seems to be wide eyed and in awe every time he plays with the Stones...what a gig man!!!!!!!!!!

Dan is astute in his perception. But to your question, TR, Ron is just a shadow Keith, and so really does nothing particularly creative for the band. Mick pushed the music to other realms, but not anywhere particularly unusual.

It was Brian who kept sound alive, by hauling all manner of instrument and influence into the mix. So in a way, your guitar question is wrong, because it was Brian who played dulcimer (Lady Jane, I am Waiting), sitar (Paint it Black), tamboura, trombone, xylophone (Under My Thumb), keybords, recorder (Ruby Tuesday, All Sold Out), kazoo (well, that doesn't take brilliance, but listen how it affects Cool, Calm, Collected) marimba... and the list goes on. The creative energy of the band was intense while Brian was still productive. Don't forget, it was his band, in the sense of it being his vision and efforts that put the other guys together.

stones

It's my belief that Brian was a natural musician who can fiddle with an instrument that he was unfamiliar with and in short order make music with it.

I vote for Brian, even though I enjoy Ronnie.

PEACE,

Jones all the way. In Faces, Jeff Beck did all the lead work anyway and Ron was just strumming the chords. Don't get me wrong, Ron Wood fits in with the Geezer look and the stones look great with him and have done well, but if you are just listening to the music, anyone with 6 months of lessons on guitar could fill in for Ron Wood.

Gregory,

I would respectfully disagree on Ron's being a shadow Keith and his creative contribution to the band. No one plays like Keith and they both have a very different approach to the Guitar. On his creativity, I will differ by asking what about all his slide and steel Guitar work? No one else is contributing that sort of thing so I would say it is particularly creative within the context of the band. He also carries lot's of lead lines Keith can't pull off IMO. The beauty to me though is that he and Keith intertwine their playing unlike any other two players ever. The synergy he helps create makes their sound very unique and I can't help but think that too is a significant contribution.

In any case, I do agree with so much else you said, and you obviously have a great deal of knowledge about the Stones early work. Brian was a musical genious without question and ironically the most opposed to going off the blues path to rock/pop styles of music. I make no comparison to Brian and Ron as it is a day and night issue, but Ronny has made a very significant contribution I think. Nice to see some other Stones fans here though, what a nice surprise.

As to your question TR, I chose Ronny in short because of the synergy he and Keith have, but Charlie is just as important. The way they play off each other is also unlike any other band ever. You ever notice how much Charlie follows Keith? Very unusual........

Now, how about a discussion on Keef's 5 (yes five) string guitars for another thread?
