Q: How does a moron try to sell a terrible frankenwatch?

A: On eBay with shill bids, of course!

I think you need to spend more time in the world of vintage before making these posts.

Wrong again

So, I read the other posts on this watch, and it appears the experts all agree the watch is legit! Talk about a barn find. This had all the earmarks of a bogus sale, particularly a sale on eBay from someone with zero feedback as a seller. I agree with whoever made the comment that they would want to close the deal face to face. I guess I still have a lot to learn.

Make it 43mm, put a cyclops on it, and call it a homage?

Just out of curiousity, what did you notice about the watch that led you to believe it was wrong?
I could tell from the first 3 bad pics that it was the real deal.

The "buy the seller" mantra took a bit of a dive on this one...

It's working. If you scroll down to the bottom of the listing, the seller updated or replied to questions from potential buyers and or current bidders. Below is a reply from the seller that was part of the updated listing:

On Mar-22-17 at 14:42:39 PDT, seller added the following information:
Geiger reading from a $50.00 Gieger counter purchased on eBay :
Backround normal radiation 0.10 microSv/hr
Peak reading over watch 41 microSv/hr. RED Danger sign came on.
Shreve's and company 150 Post Street, San Francisco, CA referred Giovanni Passalacqua
Watch and movement authentic according to :
Giovanni Passalaacqua 210 Post St. San Francisco, CA
1-415-982-9830 He is accepting inquires.
He quickly fixed the movement. Second hand now moves.

Lol

Hop over to VRF and read the very long conversation on this piece. Buyer found it in an estate and had no idea what he had.

Have to love landing treasures from the watch gods!

The Giovanni mentioned above works at the Rolex Service Center in San Francisco, I believe.

This is a super rare variation. Cool watch, for sure, but I could think of a lot better uses for $100K.

It proves that it is authentic, right?

I concur with you and I would not wear it. I am also too scared to ride motorcycles. I don't snack on asbestos.

Makes you wonder about the *Swiss* mark under the dial at 6 o/c -Radium – half life is 1600 years

Also makes you wonder about how many of these original (pre-1958) dials are still around ……..

The highlighted reading level from that list is 1000 times higher than the peak reading from the watch in the ad... im sure that there was never a watch produced that would lead to acute radiation poisoning.

The ding on the crystal is only at 5:27. When it's 6:27 there's no ding.
Way to go, champ'.

I wonder what liability the estate sale company might face with this resale? If this was a typical situation where a professional estate sale company was hired to liquidate for the family and the family finds out there is a possibility they could try to recover damages. Estate liquidators are wise to be protected with insurance, ie. malpractice insurance for which this could be argued to be appropriate.

Final bids will go in soon, it will be interesting to see.

I'm going to put a dollar on the number 127

I like the comment about the estate liq company having liability. Where I reside, these people are super unsophisticated and sketchy. The bottom line is that you never ever sell something without trying to figure out value. If they used a liquidator then they were lazy or just very unlucky. Or both. Sad for them but good on mr eBay seller

And thought it would have sold for more if it for the required paperwork when trying to bid over $100,000. Neat article.

I didn't know that there was some extra hoop to jump through above the 100k mark. I'll have to check the write up and see what the Hodinkee says
