Do you save for a specific watch?
Just wondering how other people go about their watch purchases. Do you say "it's time for a new watch", find one you you are in love with, then start putting away money for it every month? Do you not think about it, then one day just say "i'm going to buy a ________today? Or do you have a wishlist in your head, and after you acquire one, you start saving for the next on the list? Is there separate "watch money"? Just curious.

No rules for me! When cash is in my pocket I buy the one I want in that moment!! One year I can buy 6 or 10 units and the following year only one. I don't mind brand or price, if it's mechanical and I like it I go for it.

No rules. If I want it and funds are available I buy it.

Guess I am out of the mainstream. It usually takes me a year or so of research and trying on at the AD before I buy anything. Will only buy when I think the time is right and I won't notice the funds being spent.
I keep my watch "collection" to a certain percentage of my net worth also, and won't go beyond that. I waited until age 50 to get a Rolex. YMMV.

I used to spend a lot of time planning my purchases before I joined this forum, but the longer I've been here the more willing I have been to divert funds to watches. I still don't impulse buy and try to save and plan for any watch I buy.

I'm typically a one watch guy, so I'll save for the one I want then buy it. I saved for my DSSD and then sourced one NIB and paid cash. From there I've just saved, an added, to get what I want. I went from the DSSD to the Fifty Fathoms. Blancpain just released their MILSPEC Fifty Fathoms so I've budgeted from now until release how to arrive at the cash to grab one. I think I'm #4 on the North American list for one right now, and they're expecting a late summer or fall release, so it'll be just right.

I guess I do it in opposite order. For my most recent, I bought it and have been saving ever since in order to replace the cash in the bank account. In six months, I'm within a few hundred dollars of having it square.

I keep a "watch fund" and buy/trade from that separate account. Occasionally I raid it for other fun things but keep enough in there for a watch if something grabs my attention. Works great for me and keeps the wife happy. I do consulting as a side job and use revenue from that to add to the fund.

Everyone has a different buying process. I have to go through months of off and on decision making on what I enjoy mixed with; what looks good with what I wear, the size of my wrist and what is appropriate.
There are watches that a year ago I look back on and thank the heavens that I didnt buy (IWC mark XViii its way to small) and then there are some that I still see photos of and wish to have (S.S. DateJust 2 w/ blackface, JL Reverso, Vacheron Overseas.... you get the idea) Taking that time really helped me be happier and also probably saved me money. In the months it took looking, having a surplus of extra cash was inevitable so its more just allocating and pulling a trigger. |

Depends on what watch it is, I'm good buying whatever I want up to a certain number, but I reflect more deeply on something that $15K or up.

I buy when and if there is a specific model that I want. Budget permitting of course. I don't go crazy and buy something I can't afford and have get a loan for. I know that there are some who would go for an installment scheme. I am a cash buyer. But I sometimes buy with my credit card at the times where it is beneficial ie. bonus points or cash back program.

I have a watch fund now, it used to be my car fund, but since I've moved away from exotics I've allocated the money to my new hobby. I have a feeling watches are going to cost me a lot less than high end automobiles are too.

With me, impulse buys are always a disaster. I'm a long-range planner. If I still "feel the passion" a year or so later then I know it's the one for me. Funds will come out of my 'discretionary account'.

Oh most definitely.
Ive wanted a Jaeger Lecoultre Reverso since I was about 20. At 24 I was fortunate enough to be in a position where I had saved up enough to afford one. |

I'm a long range planner without anything in mind. I'll save for a long time and then see something I really like. I'll think about buying it when I get close and then decide to go more upscale and buy something better.

i buy on impulse.
i actually tried to plan for a watch i thought i'd love --- then, one year later i fell out of love with it (new AK). thats why i just don't get the whole wait list, on the list, in line to be on a list, next on the call list thing; its gotta be right there on the screen to ship or in the display for me. |

I have to plan my obscure purchases. On smaller run pieces it can be difficult to time it with availability. I am mentally struggling on a couple of pieces.
Any Rolex SS sport pieces I am normally on a whim but PM, and other manufacturers I usually need a think. |

I did start saving aggressively for an AP originally. I decided on a bluesy for now but got hosed by political winds. Forced to spend bluesy money saved on other items to soon be banned at the time. I ended up looting another account meant for other business purposes and am now in the process of paying myself back for the bluesy. The AP not forgotten

this is me, but I still take plenty of time choosing a watch. It has to sing to me for a couple of months before I consider dropping the cash. For the Platona, I did save for about a year so I would have cash. It was hard to pull the trigger, but soooo glad I did.
