More than 1 of the 'same' Rolex watch ... why??!!

Admiring some of the collections on here, I often come across individuals having more than 1 of the same 'version' of Rolex (more or less visually the same).

Outside of collecting sake for appreciation, etc -- can those of you in that position chime in with how/why you got to owning multiple examples of essentially the 'same' watch?

I've noticed it tends to be GMTs - maybe some people need to track 6 timezones? Or want Pepsi, Coke and black dials without having to remove the bezel?

There are many variations and if you love the complication, why not have a few from vintage to modern? I wish I could afford more than just my one

A lot of people like a certain type of watch, Diver, chronograph, dress watch etc. So they tend to end up with more of threat type. You will also see posters asking which watch they should get to balance out their collection.

Watches are also an addiction for some of us whilst others have that much money they don't care.

This is down to personal taste. Who cares what others collect?

Hard to explain. I have just a few of the 'same'. Probably because I believe it's the greatest watch ever made.

Many people tend to have a "type" in partners, watches, cars, etc.

I'm into cars and racing, and that's why I chose to collect Daytonas. I love there racing heritage. Different color dials, and metals give each and every one there own distinct "look" imo. Example on the 500's...

The first Rolex purchase I made was two submariners. One tt blue, the other no date. When I first took an interest, I remember being impressed by someone who could easily see the difference between a GMT and a Submariner. As my interest grew, what were once nuances looked more like massive divides. Were I a genuine collector, I'm sure the subtle differences are ever more marked. Besides this, one can never have too many submariners..or GMTs.

I've got 2 - 1600 model Datejust and 2 - 16000 models. Each has a different bezel (fluted, smooth, machined) and dial (silver, black, blue and linen) combination. On Jubilee, Oyster and leather. I love the watch and the variety you can get from them.

If I were much wealthier than I am, I'd buy two of every watch. That way, I could wear one with complete tool-watch indifference. Scratches, dings, knocks, whatever. And it wouldn't bother me at all, because I'd know I had another one back home in pristine shape. That way, the collector in me could be satisfied but I could also get full, guilt-free use of the watch.

Right now, try as I might, I just can't wear a nice watch completely "casually" -- I'm always that little bit aware of it and careful with it.

Rolexes can be "needful" things. Add to that the fact that even slight variations in a model can represent something a collector will covet. It might raise an eyebrow if somebody had several identical Submariners with absolutely no variations. Or maybe it wouldn't. If one is good, more must be better!! :)

I can't speak for Rolex, but with Patek I often buy 2 of the same reference so that when one goes in for service I'll have the other to wear for the ensuing 6-12 months.

Not for me, I tried it with Subs, my fav model, but found too much repetition, so I go for more diversity now and a smaller, more consolidated collection.

Personal taste or a passion for one type of watch I suppose. It tends to happen mostly with divers, and gmts.

While I'm not in the position of owning multiple Rolexes of the same model, I can understand those who collect ongoing variations of a particular design/theme. On the other hand, having two or three of the same identical watch model would be somewhat peculiar but to each his/her own as it's their money.

Chances are the 'other blonde' fulfills certain needs that the blonde wife is incapable of. On the other hand, with so many artificial blondes out there one's actual hair color is probably not a major contributing factor when it comes to a dissatisfied guy seeking outside attention. A natural horn-dog will bang just about anything given the right opportunity.
