Neither. Not a Daytona fan and I believe now is not the time to be buying the SD50. I would wait until the fever over the sd50 being the next new thing has passed and pick it up at a more reasonable price. You also have larger wrists; if I had larger wrists I would wait to see the new sky dweller first. That one interests me, in photos anyway, more than the other two.

Absolute no brainer: go for the Daytona and if (when) you get bored of it, you can resell it at a profit while buying the SD50 at a discount

I think the Daytona is as perfect as it gets, while a larger wrist I still think it would work for you. Plus, this is the more difficult watch to get so it's as close to a no brainer as it gets

You should try a Daytona on if you haven't already. It's a beautiful watch. But it wears very very small. Maybe you can get over that. I couldn't and found myself always looking at it trying to get accustomed to the small size. I couldn't enjoy it after that.
The black dial doesn't make it look any less dainty. I say pass on both. But whatever you do, try on a Daytona, any Daytona, before you spend that money. You might be surprised at it's wear characteristics. Maybe you'll love it once it's on your wrist. But don't be driven by the hype or simple captivation with pictures of the dial that others have posted. Could be a "caveat emptor" scenario. It's admittedly enchanting. Damn near a Siren's song in that way. So put that shit on your wrist and see if you will be happy with the way it wears. Instead of ship wrecked and stranded with a watch you think looks feminine (relative to the size of your wrist) later. Again, beautiful watch with tons of history. But it just wears too friggin small. Which sucks. |

You're in a good spot. I'd take the Daytona first.

I was able to grab a black dial Daytona C which I thought would be my absolute grail watch. I did not keep it. As beautiful as it is in pictures, I just found that it wears too small, IMO, combined with a dial that is hard to read. And I am not at all a "big watch" kinda guy, finding that 40mm Rolex sports models are nearly perfect size-wise for my 7" wrist. Even so, I just found the Daytona a little too small. Personally, I'd love to see it updated to 42mm, which I think would be perfect - about the size of a speedy.

I agree with previous comments about Daytona wearing small and not having young eyes I like the clarity of the SD43. Also glidelock, glidelock, glidelock.

SD43. I've never had any interest in the Daytona, too small for me and no date. I have the SD43 and for me it's the perfect Rolex.

Daytona first, cause you may not get another easy opportunity like this one. Then SD50.

Since your buying from an AD with no hype markup, I would go for the Daytona.
Now, let me say this, I am NOT a Daytona fan, tried twice, but it's just not for me, I have the New SD, and it's a commitment to wear, pure and simple. Compared to a sub, its heavy and you know it's there. I like it, but not everyone will. Compared to the Daytona, it's not going to go with everything as well. These are really two different watches. To each his own... been wearing the SD all weekend, put the sub on last night, was like it wasn't even on lol.

Now that I think on it more -- If you were compelled to ask, best bet is to probably pass altogether. I initially voted the new SD though, I just personally don't like the current Daytona.

Great insight guys. Appreciate it.
From a secondary market value, I think true values are fading a bit on both of these specific models. The black Daytona is more common than the white dial and seems to be being released more frequently now. In fact, regardless of what dealers say....with their 5yr waitlist BS, these watches are showing up faster now. The HARD CASH BID is higher on the white dial than the black if you were to sell to a dealer, but both watches are still bidding from dealers at higher than retail...so it is still solid. The SD50 has a bid slightly above retail from dealers, so after TAX...it isn't as solid a CASH in as the Daytona....kind of a wash. Which tells me that this is a weaker piece and is expected to be more available... Now that the valuations are out of the way, my concerns over the watches themselves. Daytona. Legibility of black dial is a concern. I have tried one on some time ago and the case size seemed to be in my range, but I can't recall legibility. For some reason I remember that that the Daytona C seemed to throw off less glare than the previous version because of the toned down sub dials. The SD50. I really don't want to pay retail for a watch that I could possibly get for less than $10k in a year. Otherwise my only other concerns are if the crown digs into the back of my hand and if the caseback has the same annoying pressure point loading that the DSSD has....big watch, small contact point on caseback is annoying. Guess I need to try them both on and make a final decision. Keep the insights coming! |

I've had my DaytonaC for five months now and never once had a legibility problem, whether in sun, dark, or that gloaming that I love so much where the lume comes out but you can still see the dial markers. I actually think the silver hands show up quite well against the black dial, and no issues over the sub dials either. I really wouldn't worry about this as you decide.

I got my SD4k at an AD for the same asking price as the grey sellers. No idea if the SD50 will eventually drop to SD4K prices but I highly doubt it will stay where it is. I'm guessing there will be eventually be better prices through both ADs and greys.

At retail...the Daytona! I know it is not about money and value retention but buying at retail one has to look at that a bit. The SD will likely be very available fairly soon on the pre-owned market at reasonable prices. I don't see how the Daytona C can be reasonable on the pre-owned market as pre-owned versions will be sandwiched between and contending with very small margins between high priced previous gen Daytona's, Daytona C's at retail if they can be had and hyper-priced new Daytona C's.

I'll almost always pick a diver over a chronograph...and even though the D500 is one hot chrono, I will here as well.
Plus, I think with your size wrists, the SD will wear better. |
