The Rolex I just purchased has no lume :(
What's going on
Made a spur of the moment purchase on a beautiful diamond dial day date. Problem is. No matter what I do. I see no lune. I lit it up with my flashlight. Absolutely nothing. Still a beautiful piece!! What's the deal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The Rolex I just purchased has no lume 😞
It's tritium. Note the 'T' markings below at 6. Great watch!

Yes. It's a 1991 model. So it's ok?

Hi IwateJapan. As it is a vintage watch with tritium, it is not unusual for the lume to dissipate. I have bought a number of watches from Houseki Hiroba, it's legit. Great pick up.

For those of us that are not that familiar with Tritium, how long does it last?
OP-beautiful watch BTW. |

Thanks man! That means a lot! It was a spur of the moment purchase. You assume they are 100% legit?

The spec on tritium is that the half life is about 12 years. That means, roughly, the brightness dims by 50% in 12 years. Then, 50% of that brightness is gone after another 12 years and so on.
I don't know anything about how Rolex used tritium. I do have a Luminox watch with tritium lume that I've owned for at least 15 years and it is still very readable at night. Luminox uses tiny tubes that contain tritium and another substance that gives off light when stimulated by the radiation tritium emits. I believe Ball watches use the same technology. The tritium tube technology is very safe. |

After about 10 years, tritium is faint.
After 20 hardly any lume left. It doesn't recharge, if you want lume it needs to be replaced. Half life is 12 years or so. Noticed no lume in my 30 year old Rolex. |

Lugs are satin finished
I like the older DDs with the satin finished lugs.

The lume on my 25 year old Submariner which has larger plots has been dormant a long time. Sometimes if it catches a lot of sun, I think I see a trace of luminescence but it may be in my mind. Your watch looks fine and you don't have anything to worry about.

You can swim with it, but because there is no service history, the gaskets might be bad which is why the company may have said that. Go to a watchmaker and have him replace the caseback and crown gaskets then test the water resistance. No need for a full service, then you can go swim with it.

Yes watches from before 1997/8 had Tritium lume which had a half life of around 12 years,so now would doubt if little or no lume glow now.

On a side note, amazing how that the endlink fitment is intentionally that poor on such an expensive watch.

The tritium on this watch looks like it is painted on. Luminox and Ball use glass tubes.

why isn't that endlink more "fitted", hugging the watch better?
