No, you do not need to be rich, though it shall not do you any harm if you are, at least with regard to buying a Rolex watch!
There are many people of modest means whom have chosen to prioritise a Rolex. They are extremely alluring to some!

There are cheaper ways into the hobby.
A good second-hand 'cheaper' Rolex from a reliable Jeweller or Watchmaker is the obvious entre.
If you are young then you have lots of time to save up for a more expensive model.

depends on how one defines "rich". Even an entry level rolex would cost 1/2 of the average annual salary measured globally. Compared to everyone who lives on our planet, i would say yes. People tend to redefine what rich means to them as they climb up the income ladder.

No you don't. But it's a big commitment if you're not. I am by no means rich, but I have one. They are ridiculously priced compared to a fashion quartz watch, but if you compared to sports and hobby equipment then it's on par.

Most peope have enough money to purchase a Rolex in their savings account. So given the the current interest rates I say no. No loss of interest and they hold their value relatively well.

This is what a Rolex looks like to me. And it happens to be available for around $3,000.

Rich is a relative and subjective term that has nothing to do with buying anything.

If you cannot use money to buy jewelry that you do not need then you should not buy it.

Many people in your situation have bought Rolexes. However. Even the Explorer is a luxury item, so I recommend you save up for one rather than buying it on credit. It can be done. Best of luck.

You must be able to afford one without borrowing, rule number one, so only use disposable income after all expenses are taken care of. Then just save. When I joined here I only thought I'd ever buy SS watches but gradually I threw off my conservative shackles and bought other watches and the only way I felt comfortable doing that was to save and plan, and I must admit I loved it. Yes. When you go into an AD (or even buy from a trusted seller for that matter), they require you to provide them with your 3 most recent pay stubs to see if you meet the income requirement mandated by Rolex. If you fail to meet the minimum income requirement, you are put on a worldwide blacklist where you are prohibited from stepping foot into a Rolex AD. Additionally, your IP address is logged and banned so you are not even able to visit a trusted sellers website to even look at photos of Rolex watches.

Depends on what you consider "rich". To me, in America, I'm not a fan of sacrificing to own material possessions. To me, the whole "YOLO" concept is foreign. It's one thing to admire and like something, it's another to obsess over them. I think people lust after things they have no business lusting after. There are Lamborghinis all over Houston. A lot of these guys live in $150k houses and stretch every penny to get one. Then they drive around all day every day in circles revving their engine with their windows down screaming for attention. It's their money, they can do what they want, but I cannot relate to that. I'd feel ridiculous having a car like that if I didn't own an extremely nice home. Even worse, many of these people have kids. I've wanted a Rolex for a long time, but I never bought one until I was able to without touching savings. That's just my philosophy, to each their own.

I can tell you this. $250k a year (what the previous administration considered exuberantly rich) is not rich by any means in my book. I'd say for ambitious smart people (real smarts not school smarts), the low $300ks a year in normal states/cities (exclude all of California, a lot of the East Coast, Chicago, etc) is the beginning of pretty comfortable (aka Cushy). At the low 300s household income, you can afford a very nice home (approximately 500-800k), 2 nice cars (50-70k each), kids in private school, 2 vacations a year, eat out twice a week, by what groceries you want, decent savings etc.

What I consider the beginning of rich, is being able to live in a $2mm house that is well furnished, own 4-5 vehicles, own a $1mm motorhome, a $500k go fast boat, take 4-5 vacations a year, fly business and first everywhere, eat out whenever and wherever you want, put two kids through private school & college out of pocket, and still sock away a few million for a rainy day. My guess is you'd need $1.5mm to $2mm per year before taxes to achieve that comfortably. No, I'm nowhere near that lol.

Beyond that I have no more aspirations. A 30,000sq ft house and 60 meter yacht is not going to increase my happiness level. Rich is a relative term. Many times it does not even involve money. That's at a total state of enlightenment!
