Actually if you want to get a leg up you really should have a look at Styleforum. Reddit may have some stuff but if your really keen on footwear Styleforum is the ticket. Basically they have an appreciation thread for a number of shoemakers and some threads for various retailers as well.

The main thing is establishing your budget, determining Lasts that work best for you, and determining what styles work best for you.

It helps to have an open mind and try to determine which Shoemaker makes the most attractive style of shoe your currently considering. Often enthusiasts get trapped into following nothing but one shoemaker or buying nothing but Cordovan because they think they have found the holy grail.

Have a gander at things way above your means to begin with and try to start early with an open mind so you'll be more aware of what is actually possible and available. Nothing wrong with buying Allen Edmonds all of your life, but then again what does it hurt to realize there are many more options of which maybe you might find either Vass, Crockett and Jones, or even John Lobb actually works best for you. Frankly I have found a great mixture of a number of different brands have really worked best for me as I have everything from Redwing, Rancourt, Alden, Crockett and Jones, Vass, Rider Boot Co, Edward Green, Gaziano Girling, John Lobb, St Crispins and a number of others.

The threads are long and contain a lot of fluff but if you have the patience to see them from beginning to end there is a lot of treasure there as well.

Hopefully this is somewhat helpful and please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Keep in mind however my information to a degree can be dated as I have found I have what I need here for now and I am currently on things that go bang. I do that a bit from watches, to footwear, to pointy things, to things that go bang. LOL

But I'm willing to help as much as possible.

Cheers,

Dan

P.S. Whatever you do don't fall for the greatness and beauty of those Edward Green Galways. They can be like M&Ms or Lays Potato Chips. LOL

When you get a chance take a look at the Edward Green Falkirk in Antique Edwardian as it is similar to the one you posted but then again.........

Well...not a big fan of Allen Edmunds.

I do enjoy my black Church's brogues. I first bought a pair out of undergrad (made for Brooks Bros). Not sure what happened to them. I think I "lost" them after I left banking for hi-tech!

Now I enjoy my Aldens and Trickers...but the Falkirks look quite nice. I am in the technology side of Financial Services now, so no need for a proper suit, but I do like to wear my brogues with jeans.

Funny... I am now looking at my shoe collection to be similar to my watches. A few Rolex, AP maybe, but no Patek / Lange. I do want a Lange someday...

Ah yes, but what do you know about Viberg or even Crockett and Jones. See, there are a number of different styles as well as price ranges. Really if you have any interest yet your only stuck with Churches and Trickers there really are so much more. Besides I thought you were looking for potentially more knowledge I guess I might have mistaken that to mean other options as well.

Oh sorry. Didn't mean to imply I had no interest. Totally open. Just mentioning what I like. I've only just started looking. Will check out these other brands.

If the Alden Barrie Last / E fits me well...what lasts might I look for in some of your other suggestions?

Your a wider fit, to some degree this will always be a challenge for you. I have a medium width foot so this has never been an issue for me as such not something I concern myself too much about either. Some people actually find themselves very often sizing up which never in the end works out very well. This doesn't mean you can't find a number of shoemakers you can use however. Sometimes the greatest challenge is finding somebody who has the wider width in stock so you can give it a go.

Here again however I'm going to refer you to Styleforum as you'll find others with the same issue. If I happen to mention Styleforum less than twenty more times as a great resource please remind me will you.

But really there are a number of ways to get this info. I think. They have a thread for wider foot challenged individuals. I know in each shoemaker and retailer thread they always talk sizing issues. Frankly the sizing recommendations from these threads and great retailers with very experienced and knowledgeable information allowed me to purchase and get a good fit with a vast number of my shoes for which I had no prior experience. To be honest I do believe to a large extent it also was because I scoured the thread for knowledge, I had established my brannock size, I established a few known sizes in well known Lasts, I have a medium width foot, I purchased through men's shoe retailers for whom they knew what they where doing, and a bit of luck.

If your interested enough and you look hard enough you'll find a vast degree of knowledge on Styleforum.

Hey, did I remember to tell you that you can find a great degree of information about footwear on Styleforum.

I tried some Edward Green Galaways on in London (Jermayn Street shop), they were the best I have ever seen, they were perfect. The trouble was that my foot was too broad, they were fabulous. I was so close to buying them, but, for over a thousand quid, they needed to fit perfectly and no amount of wishing on my part would do it.

They were the Utah, Navy in colour and were perfect.

Dan...

I'm getting the inkling of a feeling you're suggesting I check out the style forum.

I will do so without fail. I was enjoying the one-on-one consultation here.

I'm also in the US so I realize - as I did with my Churches and Trickers - that I may have to return shoes across the pond a few times. Gets to be annoyingly expensive.

Off to Vegas in a bit. I may check out some shops there - in addition to my usual watch browsing.

Cheers Sir. I do thank you.

BTW, my bottle of Bick4 just arrived yesterday. I love Amazon Prime!

Oh, hey don't mean to chase you off or not for any means stop discussing one of the passions that I enjoy. It's just my belief and the way I am when it comes to trying to help. I know I have certain limitations and what works for me or how I see things might not work so well for others and there really is such a wealth of knowledge on Styleforum.

But besides looking at Styleforum I seriously recommend even if you settle on Allen Edmonds (not my favorite either) that you look at even those things that don't work for you or that you might consider outside your budget, you'd be amazed at those who started paying less but ended up paying even more because they didn't pay a bit more in the beginning. It's a bit hard to determine if this is what you'll choose to do in the beginning or not but by being well versed to start with you'll probably avoid that path of starting small and then spending way more just because what you have no longer is appealing to you.

Returning shoes overseas for the most part is too cost prohibitive. Most will resale on Styleforum at a loss. Besides returning shoes isn't quite as easy as other things, but with shipping and custom costs this kind of thing generally just doesn't add up.You'll really need to determine what your willing to do. Of course depending on your location you might have more opportunities than others. since I'm located in the Midwest I'm sort of located almost in the middle of nowhere when it comes to access to real nice footwear. I have few places I can go to but really the internet was where I ended up going for the vast majority. Heck even I could get a few styles of Edward Greens at my local Brooks Brothers but by no men's could I get most of them and frankly some of mine are MTO (Made To Order) or GMTOs (Group Made To Orders) which for the most part no longer are an option. These were ordered that way because most of these shoes are mostly not stocked only by Brooks Brothers but can't be found anywhere. Either the model isn't stocked or the leather or color is very specific. Two specifically come to mind but I have a number of them. Then there are brands which are only stocked by a few places in the US if any at all. So many of mine where ordered from overseas it's not funny. Brands which are known mostly by only other footwear enthusiasts or by those who happen to come from that country.

The great thing with Styleforum is they discuss all of these issues. The bad thing sometimes is finding it and other little tidbits which might be buried somewhere. You can ask, but generally I found going through the whole thread I gained more knowledge. The bad thing for you is how large these threads have gotten since the time I went through them. Once you get through them it's much easier to keep up.

Keep an open mind is the best advice I can give you for now, There really is more and better quality shoemakers out there besides Trickers and Churches. Some even which are close in as well as different in style, Think outside the box you just might find something you like. Sales also happen quite often, but your problem will always be that your width isn't the common stocked width, If you find Allen Edmonds to be your favorite just remember I can no longer save you. LOL

Really though if you have any questions please let me know. If I can't answer I have no problem admitting it.

Cheers,

Dan

Ah, here you go. This will give you a good overview of a good portion but not all of what is out there. Yes, do keep in mind things such as Rancourt, Quoddy, or even Viberg or Truman probably are represented. Don't forget to proceed and look at part 2 of this review and yes it is pretty favorable and not critical by most means.

Basically I rely on everything from Saphir but their Renovateur product which is their conditioner product. Because it's a cleaner and conditioner it tend to leave my footwear a bit dry. Bick4 in my opinion is much better. But I will say I like everything else to include their regular calf waxes and cream. Also I use their cordovan creams as well. I find I use their neutral cordovan cream the most,
