How do you pay for yours?

just curious, how do you pay for your watches, cash, finance, or combination? I'm trying to save the money to pay cash, but may get impatient and do half down/half payments. AD near me usually has no interest for 18 mth, could swing that if I can't wait.

I think that this is a matter of personal comfort..

I don't like to use credit for a luxury products like watches, vacations, etc., or anything that is perishable or consumable, such as dinners, groceries, etc.. although I do use a card and pay it off when the bill comes.

But.... payments over time for a Rolex, with no interest, can be a good value. At the end of the period, the watch is certainly still worth about what you paid for it, and your money was able to earn a small bit of interest before final payment..

Much as I love them, I don't believe that anybody should over-extend themselves for a watch though..

Cash only for toys. I have heard of some AD's doing a same as cash for 12 months. If you were disciplined enough to put the correct amount of money away each month, and pay it off when you should, that wouldn't be a bad deal. otherwise, save until you can pay cash.

I put it on my AA miles mastercard then paid it off the next month.....mine as well get a free trip to go along with my Rolex!

Some ADs will offer up to 2 years interest free....but be careful they sometimes wont discount as deep, and if you miss a payment WACK you get for all past and future interest sometimes up to 21%

I bought mine on Amex to get the points /$$ and then paid it off immediately.

That .000000001% really helped!

Interest free is still debt and I do not believe in debt, especially on a luxury item. What looks likes a small monthly payment today sure changes when funds get tight. Miss a payment with your AD and see how nice they are. Save and buy with cash. A lot here do not agree with me on this subject, so use your own judgement.

Cash.

I can see the benefits to buying a Rolex with a no interest loan. Keep the money in a C.D. and get a 3% or 4% return on your investment.

I used to pay cash only but the last two went on my Disney Visa, when the bill comes I pay if off right away and score some sweet Disney dollars. I usually sell a watch after I buy another these day's, I can't justify having watches sitting in my drawer not being worn.

Buy with credit card with no interest 24 months payments. I deposit the cash in NZD earning 9.4% interest per year or about 18.8% in 2 years. Makes sense to me. It is like purchasing your Rolex at about 20% discount. If I was given a 10% discount for the watch, that would be a total discount of 30%. In addition, U will also get a 1000 dollars cash rebate for paying for the watch using the credit card. Not too bad at all!

Just a thought.
If you have a mortgage or other debt, and you save cash for a watch instead of paying down debt, are you really paying "Cash" for your watch?
Just a thought.

Good point. But then again, my house is paid for and don't have other debt either.

fair point but,
Say you have a mortgage and you have your monthly repayments fixed for a term of say 25 years. You pay all your payments on time yet during this period you also manage to save up for a rolex and pay cash. I would say that is paying cash.

Yeah, but you're still technically in debt. It's a valid point. Personally I wouldn't go borrow money against my house to pay for a Rolex, and most people would say it's not the same, but the fact is you're taking away money that could be applied to the debt of your home so...

I realize I'm the minority here, but I waited to purchase my last two Rolexes until the house was paid off. Was it fun? No. Did I pay cash? Yes, and it hasn't really bothered me since I don't have any other payments. Again, I realize this isn't popular, and I certainly wouldn't hold it against anyone to go get a Rolex when they have a mortgage as long as they aren't falling behind on it or getting 2nd mortgages or something. The home will in the long run appreciate, so if you're going to owe on something, that's the way to go.

I dont have a mortgage either, but in this instance, seeing as there can be early repayment penalties etc, it is possile to say that you are paying cash as your mortgage is being paid at an agreed rate. BUT as you say, technically you are not as you could put this rolex money towards your debt.

My expensive watches are paid for with money I get from building Ford 302/351 cid engines. There are lot mustangs out there, and they all going fast.

Another words cash...never dip into the paychecks or cc.

I use a charge card for everything. Technically, it's a credit card. But since I pay it in full each month, I am not carrying a credit balance. But I do get beaucoup miles each month which allows me the freedom to upgrade on long haul trips to Europe or the West Coast. To me that's worth it.
