Tesla's new solar roof
Less than the cost of a normal roof, lifetime warranty, and generates electricty?
What's the catch?? https://www.inverse.com/article/3143...e=facebook.com |

It's Tesla, it's probably delayed by a million years and is poorly finished when you get it.

Pretty sure this will be for new construction only as well. I read that somewhere but can't find it now.

I would totally consider this. But don't want to go with the first runs.

Recently got solar and looked into solar tiles vs. the more traditional panels. If your house is new construction or you have to replace the whole roof then these might be an option but they are significantly more expensive than just adding solar panels to an existing roof. They are also not as efficient and produce much more heat because there is no air gap between the panels and the roof. I went with traditional solar and was able to hide it from view. Its been a very mild summer so far (78 degrees avg) but I still enjoy running all 3 central AC units at 65 degrees and having a negative energy bill.

Not sure about your particular setup, but the traditional solar add-ons look like a patchwork quilt to me. And not in a good way. If you're in your house for the long haul, it seems a lifetime warranty would be pretty sweet if it's real. Replacing the roof is a costly eventuality. The electricity you generate is just gravy. |

But my question is for someone considering a new/replacement roof in 2017 is there a consumer downside to Elon's scheme? Sounds too good to be true... |

The biggest downside in the traditional panels is the look. My house is near the top of the hill so neighbors cant see the roof and we were able to locate the panels where they maximize sunlight but are not visible from the street/front or back yard. Everything has a 25 year warranty and I plan on living in this house for the next 20+ years. My break even point is about 5.5 years. $28k system getting 30% tax back $19,600 total cost) and avg bill is $300 per month going to $0 (actually negative). I look at it as where else is $20k going to get me an 18%+ ROI. I also have the mental health savings of not chasing my wife and kids down to remind them to turn off lights, TV, etc when they leave the room. These solar tiles might have a lifetime warranty but that doesnt mean it will cover your roof from leaking. The paper under the tiles is what waterproofs the roof and that can deteriorate after 50 years. Spent my childhood doing roofing contracting. We doubled up on paper on large houses with tile roofs to try and make it as "life time" as possible. |

I'm pretty sure he had to have the vision to get the $5B to begin with. Not to mention, he was already pretty damn wealthy before he got into solar panels |

He wasn't "given" $5B by the taxpayers. The people offered incentives to attract business to do exactly what he's doing, for both the public good and in the interest of private businesses driving innovation. Sounds like win-win to me. And his businesses are in position to be successful, incentives or no. Now coal and oil on the other hand...not so sure where they'd be without subsidies. I just found this and it answers a lot of my questions. Thought I'd share it for anyone interested.

Damn straight! It's always easier to criticize than to do something. The biggest roadblock to progressive innovation is the simple mind.
