Wife's lesson in how to really wear a Rolex

One year ago, I purchased a 114200 Air King for my wife. The watch was a "push" present after our second chid was born and I had the names and birth dates of our two children engraved on the back. She has worn the watch every day for work and play. She does not have the same "wrist awareness" like many of us WIS do. The watch is fit well to her wrist, but she goes about like its not there. Sometimes, when sitting around the table telling stories, I can hear the watch knock into the edge of the table when she becomes animated. Although this makes me cringe, my outlook changed a bit today when I took a closer look. After a year of wear, the watch looks beautiful!!! Now I would never wear most of my pieces like this, but it should say something to the ones who worry about getting sand on their Submariner. In summary, these watches were made to be worn and not worried about. Cheers!

Very nice! Love it. Rolex is meant to be worn with out this "wrist awareness" you speak of.

That's a great story and glad to see she's enjoying it!

I just had this same conversation with my wife this morning as she just got her first Rolex yesterday.

I like the worn look on a Rolex. My Sub has some but I’m still afraid to let my Yacht-master get scratched. In time.

She's doing it right. I too do not have this wrist awareness of which you speak.

That's the way to wear a watch that's made to endure almost anything.

Awesome! I wear my yachtmaster every day exactly the same way, this is how rolex watches are supposed to be used.

Lack of “wrist awareness” usually comes from lack of actually paying for the Rolex. I have seen this phenomenon with automobiles as gifts.

Wife's lesson in how to really wear a Rolex

My GMT-II is 15 years old and still looks like new even though it's never been serviced and I wear it most days when I travel (which is fairly often):

Pretty broad generalization. My wife babies like crazy the Rolex I gave her, and we keep our finances separate from each other.

A lot of married couples blend their monies so if "he" buys it, so did "she".

When I got my DJ about a year ago, it was like bringing my first child home from the hospital, I was delicate with everything and very “wrist aware.” But after clunking it unintentionally a few times, I learned that it wasn’t all that delicate and I wear it without any special wrist awareness. Not that I forget I have it on. I will frequently look at it to admire it. Hilariously I sometimes will look at the watch and then realize that I need to know the time, but the time didn’t register, I was just looking at the watch.

My very first sub was worn without any "wrist awareness" and it was extremely scratched up when it came time to sell. Since then my "wrist awareness" has increased but I haven't found that this impacts me in any way or form in my day-to-day activity... so.... not quite sure what this means.

If one isn't wearing a watch, is it normal to bang one's wrists against random objects on a daily basis? Or put another way, what does one gain from subconsciously banging their wrist/watch against objects?

I think I have developed a subconscious tendency to keep my left wrist slightly behind my back when navigating tight spaces (garage, working film live sets, big crowds, etc). It seems to keep my Daytona pretty ding free. If I am crawling around under a car or similar activities it comes off.

Yes, it happens way more often than you'd think.

I tend to carefully wear mine whether it's sailing, paddle boarding, body surfing, or what ever activity I'm undertaking. I do wear them however. Most damage is relatively minor and is repaired during servicing.

Yep, what he says. It doesn’t prevent, but helps limit some dings. Kind of like where I put my car on a lot.

My wife has had her Datejust 31 for less than a week and it is swirl city from school desks and aluminum MacBook. The PCLs are getting some pretty good wear, but overall, it still looks great. I am glad she loves it. She does not baby watches or cars however.
