A poll regarding honesty and integrity...

The scenario is as follows:

You already own a SS white face ceramic Rolex Daytona. A long forgotten dealer call yields a call saying " your name came up the watch is yours at list". Please answer honestly and whichever most describes the driving factor behind your action.

This was driven by a discussion on PP and no character attacks should result please.

I'd tell them I already own one and thank him for the courtesy. I don't really need 2 Daytonas, for profit or otherwise.

Unless it's a different color dial than the one I already have. j/k

I would tell the AD that I would have to pass because I already own one and appreciate the outreach.

If someone I was friends with wanted it, I'd probably buy it and sell it to them at no profit. Otherwise, I'd pass.

What will be interesting is that I anticipate no one will be a flipper. So who are they and why are there so many Daytonas offered in the grey. Of course I realize that TRF is an exceptional group but pretty remarkable if it comes to pass.

I hadn't thought of that but like it. You may as well ensure it finds a good home.

I would flip it and use the 5K profit to take my family on a bucket list vacation.
May not be a popular answer, but hey I'm being honest.

you can buy whatever you want and do whatever you want with it. if people frown upon you for flipping for a profit it is laughable. whoever buys it even at the increased price will enjoy it.

that said if you want to be a mench tell them you already have one or offer it up to a member here.

I’d take it and let other Rolex fans aware I have it and sell it to an enthusiast at what I paid for it.

I would buy and flip. There are countless watch dealers within a 10 minute walk from my apartment, and there's even a gray dealer on the ground floor of the building. It would be a very quick way to put a few thousand dollars in my pocket

The follow up poll will ask for 10k, 15k or 20k would your answer change. The story below applies.

Winston Churchill at a pub asks a single lady "my fair maiden for a million pounds would you consider sleeping with me". She responds "for a million pounds I would have to consider it". He quickly retorts "how about for 5 pence". She angrily responds "what do you take me for". Churchill dryly answers "we have established that we are now squabbling over price".

I would tell them that I already had one.

Forgive me, but I fail to see honesty or integrity issue here. In the scenario above, I had an opportunity to buy it. IMHO the fact that I already had one didn't mean anything, unless there's a law that forbid us from owning two Daytona. But since there's no law was broken and no one was hurt nor going to be hurt, if I wanted to have two Daytonas I would buy it.

I hate to be overly nuanced but one can display a lack of integrity in the absence of breaking the law. While it is debatable the degree of harm the person next on the waiting list would incur, they would in fact be harmed by virtue of further delay. Further it would be a matter of honesty as dealers anticipate your intent is to be a "true" owner. If truthful that you already own it or intend on flipping it most dealers would not sell to you. Lastly the poll anticipated people trying to find fault or exceptions so that the unlikely scenario that you own one and want another identical watch could be incorporated into the "other" response.

Thank you for your constructive input and criticism. It is noted and taken under advisement.

I would just move on.

Allow me to rephrase the poll...

You are walking and $4000 falls out of the sky and hits you square on the head.

A) keep it

B) walk away

C) give it to a friend

I'm not wealthy enough to pretend I would pass on 4K in my pocket. I'm 29 and have plenty of uses for that free money. Buy for a dollar sell for two doesn't make you the devil. It makes you a capitalist.

Don't get me wrong the watches always come first but I'm not naive. These are just luxury goods. What we do with them doesn't determine our character.

There's a weird proclivity on here to judging the occasional flipper yet praising those who do it for a living. I find that odd but I digress...

Regarding Tom's point, I agree. Not everyone who goes on these waiting lists makes a promise (or even an implied promise) that they won't flip.

If the customer made an explicit ("I'll keep it forever and pass it on to my son") or implicit (I've always wanted a Daytona, I'd gladly engrave the caseback, etc.) promise, and flipped it anyway, then that might reflect a lack of honesty or integrity. If there's no promise, then I wouldn't judge the Daytona flipper.

Your character is fine along with your integrity and I don't think anyone, nor you should lose sleep over the matter.
