Tenerife
Once again I ask for the collective wisdom on this forum for travel advice for my wife and I.
We are going to Costa Adeje in Tenerife in early November. It is our first time in The Canary Islands. We'd like to stay local, preferably hit places reasonably close to our hotel. Our hotel is right off of Playa Del Duque, directly behind The Castillo. Any recommendations for restaurants, bars, or other things to do besides lounging on the beach or by the pool? You guys have given us great advice for holidays from London, to Santorini, to Bordeaux. Thanks in advance! |

Hope you like the European budget vacationers? Last place I would ever go if I had all the options that you probably have.

Research the shark problem they have. It's been well documented. Best of luck.

Wow, that's a rather elitist statement. In the best hotels in that region you're more likely to find Russians and in early November as the kids are back at school it will be quiet and rather relaxing. Yes, exclusive it isn't, but it's very pleasant. Walk along the promenade (with the Bahia Del Duque behind you) and there are a few nice restaurants.

I went there in September two years ago and stayed in the Hotel Jardin tropical. We didn't do much sightseeing as we just wanted a one week relax by the pool and beach type holiday. For this it was perfect and as recommended above walk along the promenade in the evenings and you'll find some good restaurants. We did visit the waterpark which was only 5 mins in a taxi from our hotel and that was a good day out.

I have vacationed all over the world. In April we stayed at Chateau Les Crayeres, The Sofitel Paris le Faubourg, and The Chateaux Mirambeaux. Two weekends ago I stayed at the Comfort Inn Bethlehem PA. In August we rented crappy little Airbnb in Saint Augustine, and The Best Western in Brooklyn. You can find me about once a month, drinking beer from a can in whatever is the next new beer joint in Philly, or sipping bourbon concoctions at The Hop Sing Laundromat. Quote:
My point is, if the only places you choose to visit are exclusive five stars, you are missing out on some of the most interesting experiences in life. I have made lifelong friendships from encounters in some of the most unlikely places. Now, what's the best dive bar in Costa Adeje? I want to go day drinking, then pass out by the pool. |

If you think Rolex is elitist then I'm afraid you're very much mistaken. Let's agree to disagree on the topics of wristwatches and vacations and thank the Lord that gulfstream69xr7 has a more open outlook on life.

Agree that going to exclusive destinations and staying at expensive hotels doesn't make someone better or classier than others... nor does staying at basic hotels or drinking at dive bars make someone Gandhi...

Was in Costa Adeje once, really liked it. Great climate and perfect for relaxation. Dorado is the Canarian beer and not bad; there was an Especial type in a blue bottle which was good.
Plaza del Duque is very nice - the shopping centre is not bad and prices on watches are decent as the Canaries has very low VAT. Ideal Joyeros is a Rolex AD and has a full-time resident technician if you need that. I bought an Omega Seamaster pro there. Re day-time drinking, I was with the family so cannot tell you very much. I would recommend a day trip to Santa Cruz - it is a big city with some interesting architecture by Calatrava and I reckon it would have a good bar scene. Can be a bit windy so be prepared for that. Enjoy! |

For day drinking, 1.20 a pint in the Pheasant Plucker during happy hour is a recipe for disaster/success!

If you like road cycling, cycle up El Teide. It's 50km of climbing.
We go to the Canaries in the winter for some cheap winter sun and went to Tenerife last year. We just hung around the hotel and went to Siam Park, the water park. |
