Personally, I would (and did) go with the Sub.

I bought a 114060 for my first Rolex, after considering many other options, and finally choosing it over the Datejust. Years later, I couldn’t be happier! It’s still my daily watch. And I don’t think it looks too big on your wrist. The only other question I would ask is what environment you’re mostly going to wear it in. If it’s dressier or more formal attire, that would make a difference. I wear shorts, t-shirts, and flip-flops every day, so the Sub made more sense for me. Either way, good luck on your decision!

I have the blue 3-6-9 op 36 and it has pretty much become my daily watch. I haven't got massive wrist so find the proportions just lovely. Understated certainly which I like but if you want more of a statement piece then maybe the sub

Rub a dub dub... I like the sub!!!
Lookie here... the OP is very nice , don’t get me wrong !!!
I do like the grape dial OP very much !!!
Just not as your first ! It’s more of a collection piece IMHO!!!
Get the Sub , you’ll thank me and everyone else voting for it .
It’s classic, timeless, versatile and it will hold value better than
the OP!!! It may wear slightly larger but that’s ok if it’s not too
heavy on the wrist ... If it is , then look for the 5 digit sub like
some others mentioned ... Best wishes and let’s see that sub on
an incoming thread !!!!

I was in the same boat a couple of months ago and ended up with a sub..... can’t be happier

For a first Rolex, for me it is a sub, now I’m looking to get an OP but honestly i don’t think I’ll like it as much as my sub!

You can’t go wrong with either anyway so see what speaks to you more but subs will be more popular imho

First Rolex - OP 36 or Sub?

You see Submariners every day due to their popularity whereas the OP sails right under the radar.
I also doubt I'll need to go past 100m underwater any time soon so that's not an issue - and love not having a bald patch on my wrist where the Triplock crown on the Submariner rubs!

You need to wear your watch higher on your wrist. Triplocks shouldn’t dig anymore than twins, unless you wear your watch too low. Easy to adjust with a Glidelock too. I’ve also never heard anyone say the same about the triplock on a Daytona.

I do the same at people who avoid the Sub because they think it's "everywhere"

Like somebody else wrote, my sub 16610 finds itself snug in a box while I daily a 36mm Oysterquartz. I like the sub, but I see a fair number of people wearing them and have mixed feelings on that. Also, I do think the large watch thing is cooling off. Finally, I don't like doing "the thing" so I find myself more satisfied doing "my own thing".

One thing not mentioned - legibility. The sub isn't a quick read for me when I'm trying to read to-the-minute while walking or biking. The Datejust is easier on that for me. So, if you have factors other than aesthetic or trends, make sure to give them their due.

As others have said as well, the Explorers - I like.

Take your time. Try things on. Google some older variants. And, uh, I wouldn't buy retail when the secondary market is so full of mint conditioned numbers.

So here's a question for those that feel the Sub is too common:

Is it the 5 digit or 6 digit Sub that you are seeing everywhere?

I have a strong feeling that they are the 5 digits and not the current 6 digit models that are commonly seen. The only thing in common between those Subs and current Subs is the movement inside. Unless we're talking 114060 and then nothing really is in common with past models and the No-Date Sub really is unique from prior generations.

If you have the usability for a dive timer (which times anything and everything), Sub. Plus it's the quintessential Rolex. Instantly recognizable.
There's that. Which also means a lot of them around, a lot of opportunities to pick up a preloved one.
The OP in grape is a rare bird, fun color and nice mixup. But, it's a color and might not go with everything. I personally like a date and would look at a DJ36 in blue or black. Maybe thats a bit too safe...choices...have fun

I went 36 OP in Steel and haven't looked back. Perfect "stealth" Rolex that usually won't get a second glance unless by someone who knows what to look for, which is exactly what I was going for. Fits perfectly under a dress shirt cuff, goes with almost any outfit and has a timeless appearance that would have looked as great 30 years ago as it will 30 years from now.
