What are some of your favorites?

Tried something new this weekend, it was a little on sweet side, but I thought it was tasty. If you do like something a tad bit sweeter, give Van Brunt Stillhouse Bourbon a shot.

Anyone have any under the radar recommendations?

Still need to get a decent bottle... I'm a scotch guy but would like to broaden my selection of whisky.

A good bottle to try right now is Old Forster's Prohibition Style 1920, it's not cheap here in the states so it won't be in Europe either (if it's even exported?) but it's a good entry/premium level Bourbon that isn't over oaked or bitter. A step up from there are 4Roses Single Barrels, another good entry/premium level Bourbon. The distillate for Bourbon has to be 51% Corn so by it's very nature, Bourbon's are sweet.

If you don't like sweet spirits try American Rye's, a good compromise for those who prefer less candy and more bite. Whistle Pig, Knob Creek, Russel's Reserve, Old Overholt are good rye options.

I like Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare and Blanton's. I like scotch fine enough too, but prefer the sweetness of bourbon.

There are a bunch of articles from a few years back about how many "craft" brands come from an industrial production facility in Indiana. Much of what you're paying for is marketing, so the lower priced brands may be the same thing as the higher priced ones. That said, I like Bulleit Rye (I believe it's from that facility but it's reasonably priced).

It’s bourbon Christmas time right now with all the releases.

Used to could find this on the shelves through out the year. Now it is only released once a year. Probably my favorite for $40.

I used to drink Bookers and Knob Creek, but I'm sad to say that I think I am losing my taste for bourbon.

After starting to focus more on wine, I just don't seem to enjoy bourbon/rye/cognac anymore. :(

My current favorite is Angels Envy but it's sometimes hard to get. Woodfords and Buffalo Trace when AE is unavailable.

All good recommendations. Can't go wrong with all the ones mentioned. I got a bunch of higher end stuff but seem to always fall back on Wild Turkey 101. I think it's got a bad reputation but it's decent stuff. Might not want to listen to me though I like to drink no mine with some ice and Coke, Ha. This years Pappy Van Winkle was just released but I'm sure most people won't be seeing that anywhere.

Contract distilling and brewing are nothing new, and neither is blending or buying other distilleries distillate. Assuming they are all the same because they come from the same place is doing a disservice to the mash-bills and the master distillers IMHO, they are not the same. I read a couple of articles "Modern Day Snake Oil" comes to mind it was a hatchet job of writing and inaccurate. Caveat Emptor for sure but large distilleries are evil and make bad product cause THEY say so? Nope, not true.

at this point in my life i drink one thing only and i dont care what others think - it is jim beam.

i've had everything from pappy to blantons to green label jack and cutty sark.

now if you want to get into beer that is a different story.

but pound for pound my old favorite was basil's hayden.

My wife has a friend that had a get together a few months back. There were 4 families hanging out. The host's husband had to do something and couldn't make it back to the house. Needless to say, this woman wasn't happy.

She asked me and the two other guys there if we wanted some bourbon, we all said yes... She pours 3 huge glasses neat and brings them over. I take a sip and instantly knew, but asked anyways, "can I see the bottle?"

She poured us all 23 year old Pappy, like a $3k bottle. I felt a little guilty drinking it, but what was I gonna do, pour it back in the bottle after I already took a sip?

That is one woman who I don't want to cross.

Ouch I bet the husband was pissed. I've had a 20yr bottle of Pappy since 2011. I just haven't found the right "special" occasion to open it.

She most certainly knew. She was pissed off at the husband for not being there after she had this planned for weeks and this is how she went about it.

I didn't take seconds, although it was offered. I felt bad enough knowing how pissed he would be. I prob wouldn't have taken the initial glass if I knew what she was going to pour. Once it hit my lips though, I didn't have much choice in drinking it.

if he purchased it at retail it was only a few hundred.

I've worried about the same issue, but with wine. My wife wouldn't really know what to do so I have the bottles listed and value and gave it to my ex-wife's husband. He also knows where the key to access the wine is. I have to update it 2x a month
