What would you pair with an Explorer 1? (Submariner vs DaytonaC)

I have a Rolex Explorer 1 and am looking to add either a Daytona or Sub to my collection. I’ve been debating this for a while but I really love both.

Some thoughts:
-No date sub and black Daytona only (no hulk, white dialed Daytona, other watches, etc)
-Robustness, waterproofness, etc is not important (I have other watches, but I don’t want to post my collection and have people try to avoid overlap etc)
-I understand they are priced different, let’s ignore that
-not having a date is unimportant, I never look at it anyways.

If you could pair either the No-Date Sub 114060 or black Daytona 116500 with an Explorer 1, which would it be and more importantly WHY?.

I wouldn't choose a second no-date watch. However, even disregarding the date, I think that the black dial Daytona is hard to read. I like the blue-dial DJ 41 or Sky-Dweller.

I never set the date on my watches and prefer the cleaner dial of a no date. Thanks, I should have mentioned that and have added it to my original post.

That's a tough one. I guess it boils down to whether you need the stop watch function of the daytona or the timing bezel of the sub. For me, the sub is much more useful...but, that's me.

Pairing with an Explorer, given a choice I would not choose either. Black dials are sharp, but I’ve got too many of them, a silver or blue dialed DJ41 or a TT Daytona for me.

But seriously, a 114060. Because i won’t get caught up in the wait forever or pay over msrp crap of the Daytona.

Depends upon your preference of a watch about the same size as your Explorer...Daytona C or a larger size sport watch Sub C. Do not think you will be disappointed with either.
I would choose the Sub C as my 2nd Rolex.

After I bought my 114270 I bought my 116200 63600.

I'm not sure why I was so drawn to the DJ after the Explorer, but I was. I was in my AD one day when I saw the one I wanted, except that the one I saw had the fluted bezel, so I ordered the same watch with a domed bezel.

Later I added the 14060M and the 116710BLNR.

I entertained the 116520 throughout that time, but I was not very attracted to it and it also exceeded my self-imposed four-digit limit for watch expenditures.

My personal opinion is that one should not depend on the opinions of others regarding which watches to buy.

Research the various models and brands, including the opinions of owners regarding those watches regarding their satisfaction, until such time as the correct decision becomes manifest. To me, that is the correct time to buy--when you are convinced based on your own research that a watch is best for you.

Yeah..... that’s my thought too. I mean, both watches are so different, and the Daytona is in a league if it’s own.

That said, since you asked, I would go with the Submariner. Why? Well, Daytona has a more sub dials than I either need - or want, and think the Submariner is a better, more practical choice.

I would personally choose the SubC. I always thought chronograph dials were a bit busy and I never had a practical use for them.

I don’t think I really need either. I always use my phone for timing things but enjoy that the watches both offer a little extra. :)

I have a White dialed and Blue dialed watch in my collection already. I tried not to mention them to avoid the “oh, since you already have a diver, the sub is out. I’m trying to build my collection around my more expensive pieces, which these would be.

I’m already on the waitling list for the Daytona, but can also just move my deposit over to a sub. I was using the wait time to decide on one but I’m no closer now than I was before.

Tried this already. I’m Indian so have a darker skin tone. I didn’t think the green bezel looked very good on me, would never wear it.

I would choose the Sub C as my 2nd Rolex.

After getting the Explorer 1, I think it fits just about perfectly on my wrist. Though the sub if chosen would be one of my smaller watches so not a problem.

The Explorer is very understated and has a clean dial, the Daytona would def complement that with something a bit busier and flashier. Never thought about this.

Agreed. However, hearing the opinions of others sometimes helps you clarify or realize something which makes the decision easier to make when you’re torn. Hoping for something I hadn’t thought of.

Since I already have the Explorer 1, id like to add one more. Having 3 black dialed Rolex sportswatches is a bit much for me, and I’m not a fan of the white Daytona or the hulk. So it really comes down to either one or the other for me.

I asked myself the same question, yet my options were Sub, GMT II, or Daytona. I eventually settled on the Omega Speedmaster Professional.

It is a perfect complement to my 214270. It also is designed to withstand the extremes, like the Explorer.

I never thought I'd get something besides a Rolex for my second watch, but I am very happy with my decision. And I'll probably eventually get a GMT :-)

Haha, generally the hope is to get a “I chose/would choose x over y, because...”

I’ve been talked out of a few watches this way. There’s only so much you can pick up about a watch after fiddling around with it for about 3minutes in the AD (or in the case of the Daytona not at all). This is a pretty big decision for me so I try to do research and get as much feedback as possible.

Wow. I debated between the Speedmaster and Explorer 1. The Speedy is a gorgeous watch and I love how it nice it looks of pretty much every strap you throw at it. I just found the size/style not to be as versatile as the Explorer and then got bit by the Rolex bug!

Sub 114060 for sure. Nothing wrong with having two watches with time only functions. Ad I have never been a big fan of the Daytona, so that is a big reason WHY for me.

The Daytona! I own both a no date Sub and Explorer and I enjoy them both but they fill kind of the same spot in my collection and if I had to let one go it would probably be the Sub. I have decided my white Daytona and Explorer could be a perfect two watch collection.
