DD2 vs DD40

When it comes to Rolex watches I’ve always been drawn more towards the professional sports models as opposed to the day date.

One of the reasons why I really liked the DD 2 was because it looked more like like a dressy but still sports watch. I think the reason was because of the particular design and dimensions of the case… That made it look sporty… But with the day date 40… That doesn’t look sporty… That looks



like a dress watch.

That was one of the reasons why they discontinued the DD2 and replaced with DD40 Because people didn’t like the dimensions of the DD2 when compared to DD36?

I was just wondering what everybody preferred in terms of a DD40 vs DD2 and Why?

The DD 40 looks like a DD 36 that was photos hopped up 20 points very well.

The DD2 looks like a DD 36 that was badly photos hopped 10 points

Afraid I prefer the 36mm version. Both of the new super-sized models look off IMO. Especially the fluted bezel.

I’m 6’1’. Typically wear sub or Batman. Recently had opportunity to try on both 36 and 40 platinum DD. Greatly preferred the 36 on my wrist despite being used to a bigger watch.

6.5" and the DayDate II looks too big on my wrist.

Much prefer the 40. However, there were a few dials on the DD2 that were to die for.

Specifically which dials are you talking about?

I really loved the concentric circle glacier blue dial on the platinum model as well as the blue wave dial on the wg.

Yeah...the wave dials in general are crazy. The WG blue wave is absolutely stone cold killer.

Love the concentric circle dials as well.

Now I will say, much prefer the deconstructed romans on the 40.

I had a DD2 but now prefer the proportions of the 40.

I bought a DD40, but traded it back for a DD2. I am much happier now. More substantial size and sportier looking (which suits me better than dressy). However, the DD40 is an identical match to the 36 in proportions which some find more attractive.

If you are expecting the DD40 to actually be 40mm you will be let down, it's only 39mm, another Rolex marketing scam in regards to watch sizes.

Dd 2 is like it's own watch... dd40 is like a dd36 but in 40.
Dd2 I notice the market prices went up a little. But I guess there are only so many now.

I am old school I like the 36 BUT I would take the 40 over the out of proportion II any day no question

I love the DD40 and have a PT and a YG, but the OP is 100% true.....i like the size on the DD2 as well and some of the dials are killer.

Really want a NEW RG wave dial DD2.

SubC fits me fine, but all 42mm+ watches are too big IMO.

DD40 to wear as a daily beater.
DDII to collect n keep.

DD40 is a more balanced watch and looks and feels better on the wrist. I have tried both but owned none of them though.

That's the one right there

I think the arabics and the blue wave dial suits the case. Sort of a chunky, funky piece IMO.

I own the 36, 40 and 41.. somehow I find the 41 is very round and “soft” while the 40 is very sharp not just visually but to touch too. The 36 are in the middle.

Could this because of the 41 i own are all in PT hence with the smooth bezel?

Love to hear other collectors/owners inputs!

I like both the DD 40 and the DD II. At some point I may go DD 40 but for now I enjoy the look and feel of my DD II.

If I was to view it as haircuts the DD II is a mullet with the PM content providing the business and the size providing the party. The DD 40 is a straight up undercut ready for the office.
