I would like to add my grandfather to the list of people that carry a lot of cash. He is not wealthy, but always has around $5000 in cash. Some in his wallet and some as part of his "front pocket" money.
I tell him all the time he is crazy, but he says he has been poor and grew up during times when cash meant everything. He will never change.

Although I rarely carry more than $57 these days, if I'm attending a funeral I'll stow a thick stack. Like my uncle once showed me. Some in more straitened circumstances travel far further to honor the dead; it is good to relieve them some of their burden when so far from home.

No checks, no cards and if you don't have at least $5k in your pocket I don't think there is any point being there. Doesn't matter the price, $500 or $50,000 it's cash only.. If you ask if they take checks, they are going to look at you funny. |

I must be old school. I carry anywhere from 2 to 6K on me regularly. Also have two one ounce U.S. Gold Eagles in the watch pocket of my Levi's.
Not a drug dealer or a law breaker but I do love seeing something priced below market. I buy and then resale it. Just paid $800 for a two year old car trailer. Ought to get $1,500 out of it. Just love buying and selling. It's not the few bucks that charge me. It is the two deals going through I get the charge from. The gold coins... Amazing really. Some folks just lose every corner of their mind when a gold coin comes out. Many times I have paid less just by asking. "Would you trade for this gold coin?" |

$200 max. Lose a wallet and you can cancel cards, but can't get your cash back.

Also, I think Mrs. Steve is very capable of helping with that cache...

I tend to keep about £1,000 - £2,000 on me (in various currencies). I live and travel to countries for work where paying by card is not always practical. Hence the cash.

I would much rather lose $200.00 in cash than my wallet containing my drivers license, CDL medical certificate, police ID, medical cards, and numerous credit cards. It's an enormous hassle replacing these items then you have to worry about identity theft once someone has your personal information.

It's about having cash, not about spending it. Having cash in your pocket changes your vibe. The aunt from Albuquerque or the uncle from Utica have too much pride to accept money, but an empty offer is just that. Your voice is hollow. Offering to slip your aunt a C-note or three to ease travel or enhance her visit ... "Do you have enough spending money for the visit, Aunt Amazing?" So many things can go wrong on a day of mourning - or celebration. As a youngster I noticed the men who at weddings and funerals, at the slightest hint there was an issue money could solve, were ready to help. Now I'm one of them. A million years ago an office manager took his best team out to breakfast, and the diner's CC machine went off-line. Only one of us was prepared. |

I almost never carry cash. I just finished a job in Florida where everywhere you go has a toll road. I had to change my way of thinking just to get around! It never hurts to have a little cash on hand. But not like the amounts you carry, Mon!

I usually carry more than $200 but less than $350
In HK this was a practical consideration. Taxis were cash only. The Octopus (public transit card) needed to be refilled with cash. And many restaurants/cafes/shops didn't accept my AMEX. |

You can use a Sunpass, but the law in Florida allows people to just drive through and then be billed later by mail.

I carry cash everyday, not much, since i'm a student, but still, enough to go through the day, it's not that I don't trust banks, I just don't care much for credit/debit cards, so I don't even carry one.
I guess it has to do with how I was created, I have always seen my dad carrying cash, and I come from a family of dealers (dad in art and antique business, mom in luxury vehicles and armoring business), and I learned over time that cash has a strong effect on closing a good deal. And yes, some people might not understand it, but it generally is a good idea to carry a bit of money around if you buy and sell a lot, sometimes, the best object of the day comes from a place that doesn't take cards, I have bought way too many watches from places like that, only with cash or checks. |
