Any current BMW X5 owners?

Friends,

Requesting candid feedback from any current generation (2014 +) X5 owners.

I am looking to move from my A6 to an SUV, and considering the X5. Not really cross-shopping other brands yet (already familiar with Audi - and pleased with the brand), but always liked the design of the X5. There are some agressive deals on 2018 models, especially with the redesign soon to be released.

I drive approximately 15K per year, mainly highway miles if that makes a difference with your thoughts. Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks!

I've had a bunch of different cars, 2014 X5 was one of them. I love bmw's and especially the X5 if you're looking for an suv. As long as they're under factory warranty I'd go for it (if not, buy some type of extended warranty). I really like the way they handle and accelerate, definitely a "driver's" car. I'm waiting for the 2019's to come out and going to pick one up for my wife. You should be able to find some really good deals on 18's like you said, definitely worth it. Good luck!

Never liked the X5's, to boxy for me, but then again the BMW 550i GT some say is pugly - I love it though, totally unique ride, on a 7 series frame - V8, twin turbo - huge amount of room and space if you need it with the two trunks - and a monster in Sport Mode or any mode for that matter....worth a look, you just don't see to many on the road, and in person they look amazing, can't tell you how many people ask me if it's a new BMW model and think it's a beauty.

I've had two. Absolutely the best all around, relatively conservative SUV in my opinion. Two negatives were depreciation and cost out of warranty which is pretty common in the lux SUV market. I might lease another one if the deals are good towards the end of the summer.

I just traded in my X5.

I liked it a lot. But there are a lot of variables. It drives very much like a car. Which is good. It’s super comfortable. But don’t expect any kind of roar. It’s not necessarily exciting.

However, if you get the (DHP) Dynamic handling package it takes away a lot of body roll and makes it a lot more fun. You can really lean into turns for an SUV.

I also highly recommend the 50i. It’s got a good amount of balls and is fast. A decent amount of turbo lag tho.

Finally, I suggest the M sport package and the M sport suspension. The package is mostly just aesthetics, but it really adds to the look. And the suspension definitely helps the drive.

The tech inside is great. The smart buttons are just lovely and I miss them terribly. I wish my RRS had them.

The x5 is not great in the snow with all the sport stuff. You will likely need dedicated snow tires if you go that route.

It’s a great car. But get something a year or two old and save a fortune.

Oh yeah, I had it nearly fully loaded. But I didn’t have the ventilated seats and I regretted it. Mine were black and they got really hot.

Happy to answer any specific questions. Overall loved mine. It’s a great vehicle.

Had Audi Q7, RR Sport and by far the X5 F15 is the better handling vehicle. Buy used and save $$$$. This is my second (first was a 4.0d - twin turbo) currently driving the M50d (triple turbo) which defies physics!!

I’ve got a 2012 X5. I’ve had it for 4 years and I love it. When this one is ready to get traded in I’ll be getting another. It’s a great SUV

I recently purchased a Q7, but I strongly considered the X5. The imminent redesign discouraged me from making the X5 purchase. Also, the Q7 is one of the most highly rated SUVs per the majority of reviews.

Another thing to consider is the super soft steering.

If you like to feel the car, it might not be the right vehicle. There is very little fesback from the road. It’s the one thing that I really didn’t like and could not get used to.

I have the previous generation X5, love it. Driven the current one, and they are very alike.

Go for it, but I must confess I have BMW DNA.

I have a 2017 X6 so similar and love it. I have a short commute with a maximum speed limit of 35mph and am not an aggressive driver so I can’t comment on the steering like an enthusiast can. But on pretty straight Indiana interstates it works for me. I have the i35 and it seems to have plenty of pep.

X5 is too big for me and cumbersome to park. I am waiting to upgrade to the all new X3. Sadly it's not yet available where I live yet. My BMW dealer said it's coming in Q3.

BTW, any all new X3 owners?

The X5 is a great car, especially the current gen.
They were ROCK SOLID in resale for years until recently, same as the Range Rovers. They were all getting flipped to China and Vietnam for stupid profit. They have both been out for years so demand has filled.

I have a 17 X6M Dinan and it’s a nut on wheels. Interior and tech is head and shoulders above the competition. They do drive more car like vs SUV like so keep that in mind.

If I was in the market and had to get a new SUV, I would go with the new 2018 Range Rover and Sport that come out in a month or two. Or the new body Cayenne.

You really can’t compare the M with its little brother. It’s a completely different vehicle.

I drove the X5M before I got the RRS Autobiography, as I debated between the two, and the M was night and day to my 50i. Almost zero similarity in driving feel. And that’s saying a lot for the M, because the 50i is awesome.

So far, I can’t get on board with the new Cayenne body style. But I’ve not really seen it on the road yet. Maybe that will change.

Tech, while still a factor, is far less important these days. I use my phone for nearly everything. By many reports, this is true for a lot of people. In a car, I use the radio, but that’s about it.

That’s the X5 LM. A prototype car from BMW. It uses the S70/3 motor (V12). It’s a motor that BMW used on some of its race cars and also a variant of the motor used in the McLaren F1.

This is what a real M motor sounds like.
